I was assigned a hardly used 629-3 8-3/8".

Cylinder opening can be rough.

This has been stored since 2004 and I clean up the old dry lubed.

Cylinder open, cylinder release bolt held back….trigger press is decent for a bone stock action.

Close the hard cylinder….trigger press increases dramatically.

with a closed cylinder, draw the hammer back slightly….I can rotate the cylinder and some drag can be felt.

When I push the cylinder release bolt forward….it is hard or rough to drive the center pin forward.

Upon examination, the cylinder release bolt does not sit flush on the back plate of the frame….just slightly below flush and evidence of stainless being peened on either side of the hole and 3 and 9 o'clock respectively.

also looking at the image below, there is a semi circle from 3 to 7 o'clock. Obviously from extractor drag.

since my extractor drag is not square to the back plate…is something off with my alignment of the center pin?

This gun was motioned to the PD and assigned to me. The PD will not pay for any repairs or mods….so its all me.

I would like to smooth out the trigger press but I think the cylinder area needs attention first.

any home fixes? there are a lot of jagged corners on the extractor where it is riding up on the back plate.

will dressing these jagged raised areas improve smoothness?

Check to see if the extractor rod loosened up ( it's a reverse thread )

excessive cylinder gap?

Follow-up…bent ejector rod.

ejector rod is bent.

I can see it rotating uneven.

I took the cylinder apart and the center pin was going in the ejector rod very rough. I thought the issue might be the center pin as it looked like it had flats and the top edge was very sharp. I dressed it and while it improved, I reinstalled and trigger pull is very smooth on 4 cylinder and starts to bind on the 5th with the 6th pull being the hardest.

Upon closer inspection, there is a couple of marks on the front of the cylinder where is probably landed on the floor.

now I have to figure out how to straighten….its not off much…but I can see it.

any tricks on straightening an ejector rod.

I did one on a Kframe years ago with light tapping, but that ejector rod is baby compared to this one.

I guess I got a Friday Afternoon or a Monday Morning Gun

I was just sighting in, dry….since the ejector rod is bent and I thought the front sight looked like it tweaked left (not straight up)

I was right, the barrel is not square to the frame.

that adds more bind to the ejector rod and a heavier trigger press!!!!!

going back to SW. I got a label via email.

6-8 weeks I will be notified of the issues and if any charges beyond warranty.

6-8 month wait for the actual services.

Gotta ask. Is this going to be your service revolver? If it is, the department should step up and get it right. If not your carry weapon, then what are they expecting of it and you?
Best of luck and be safe, brother.;

I will use it in a Law Enforcement Only Competition.

It belongs to the dept through a criminal court motion. The original possessor was a felon.

I can only do several things with this gun....

cut it, dept use, or sell via public auction (and our Legal Dept will not approve that. I have lost that battle several times)

It was assigned to me.

If I leave the dept, it has to stay.

Smith & Wesson repair times

As a word of encouragement.
I sent a Model 625 for warranty repairs, via a Fed Ex label on their dime.
Thanks for that Smith & Wesson !!, anyway, they said three weeks or more I would get a call and be told how long it might take to fix.
About three weeks later, gun showed up fixed !
Sadly, although it did not do what it used to do, it broke its hammer nose after about 18 rounds, never have had that happen with a Smith before.
Well, at least the primers no longer back out as they did before sending it in.
It bugs me that they send back no explanation of what they did either.
But, gun feels good, shoots well, or did for 18 rounds anyway.
Anyone have a flash chromed hammer they would sell ?
I want to fix the one I have too, but would like a spare since I have several N frame guns that use this style of hammer, I suppose I could use a casehardened hammer ???
