Based on today's gun market and one photo, the $850 price won't bring "are you crazy?" comments. If you want the gun by all means buy it.

That fine gun would already be in my stable..........
It is maybe priced $50 too high... MAYBE.
$50 wouldn't slow me down for a second if I wanted a gun.
My most similar Model is my 29-4 5".
Which is on my shortlist of guns I would NEVER part with.
I bought mine used in the early 2000s, so the price was lower, but times have sure changed since then....
I prefer blue to stainless any chance I can get it, but I sure like my 5" Model 610 no dash too...

Where in the world can anyone find a pre lock .44 caliber S&W for less than a grand nowadays?
OP... Those are factory holes. If you are buying, make sure you get the rear sight. A lot of times those go missing on guns that someone put a dot or scope on.
The price is ok for today's market, but if that sight is gone. Try talking him down a hundred bucks. You should be able to find one for 50 or 60 bucks, but screws and shipping adds up quickly.
I think that is just where the scope mount was - might have rubbed a little or most likely some crud caked on.
Personally, I think you made a very good buy! From what I can see, the stop notches appear crisp and the gun looks clean. I have never had the screws removed on any of my guns that are drilled and tapped for a scope, so I don't know what it kind of screws are needed to fill the holes. When you find the right screws, try to get the front one to completely fill the hole level with the topstrap. Smith puts in short screws, and debris ricochets out of the hole onto the cylinder, leaving a round spot on every chamber that takes work to clean.

Those holes are all from the factory ... at least according to the two 629-4's sitting in my safe. The darkened parts on top of the back strap are color transfer from the scope mount.

I swear every time a gun comes up in a post there is one person who seems to live on another planet who won't pay the going rate for whatever gun is being talked about. Doesn't matter if nothing has been touched on it, they invent some sort of "Like this gun" or something like that and knock a third off the price. I have a sort of friend who does it all the time and it makes me laugh when I buy a gun at what appears to be a totally dead center price, and he comes back with, "Well, I wouldn't have paid that for it!". When I bought my 629-1, I paid the going rate for one in the box with paperwork, etc, and he comes up with, "Well(Always well is the first word), I wouldn't have paid more than $650 or so for it!" I asked him to find me one for $650 and I would buy it instantly. Silence.

I don't know what drives that type of behavior. Is it people that are recalling prices from long ago?
Like the first 686 I ever got was a 6" -5 that cost 399 brand new... in 1999. Maybe it was the 108 bucks spent on a model 28 in 1969.
While I am sure there are deals out there to be found, collector interest, and covid craziness is driving prices ever higher. We will never see a day where good classic Smiths are cheap again.

Yep, those are factory holes, I believe the -3 were the first of the 629s so adorned.

In todays market 629's are going for $900-$1100
I just paid $750 for a 629-6, $200 after they gave me $550 for a Ruger I bought new this year. I thought for a gun store both prices were fair, and if they didn't want the Ruger, I still would've put the S&W on lay-away till after Christmas and sell the GP100 myself, as I don't need two of the same caliber. What dash number did the 629's lock start with? I would probably buy the OP's gun for that price as long as either the original sight or one of those dot sights came with it. Nice gun. I didn't know I wanted one until I saw mine in the case.

IIRC, MIM hammer/trigger was with -5 and lock was -6.
