My 629-4s, all four of them have left very little room for improvement.
I recall reading at the time, that the 629-4 had tight chamber mouths. I have one, it is very accurate, but also sensitive to showing over pressure indications in rounds that don't bother my Ruger Super Black Hawks.
My model 629-4 power port thinks that it is a 250 yard prairie dog gun and I've yet to come up with a reason to argue with it
, I have multiple -4's from 3" to 8 3/8" And I consider all them extremely accurate.Tom
I think what accuracy improvements may have occurred have been in small increments. You might find as much variation from example to example as from ECO to ECO. I can't supply evidence. Just my impression. Odds probably slightly favor the newer guns, providing you get one with a good barrel.
I have a 629-3 with the so-called Classic barrel style. A couple of years ago, a friend, who is probably a slightly better pistol shooter than I am, used my gun and ammo to shoot at a clay bird we had taped on a cardboard target 100 yards away. He knocked a chunk off with his second shot and broke the remainder with his next. The ammo was a cast 250 grain LFN and 19 grains of 2400. It was the only clay bird we had so he didn't try it again. Before that he had shot a 5-round group on paper that was right at 5-inches. The gun is nothing special. Just a plain, out of the factory box, stock 629 with no tuning or modifications. Id say it has a good barrel, and the shooter was probably "having a good day."
No matter what 629 version you buy, with good ammunition, and if you're a good shooter, I doubt you will be disappointed.

My 4" No Dash is as accurate as I want it to be.

This 629-4 is my go to IHMSA gun. When I act right it's plenty accurate to hit steel critters at 200 meters.

There are guns that I have that I'll run warm loads thru. Not my Smiths. My 629s fire a 429421 Lyman at 1200. That was good enough for Elmer. Good enough for me. I don't know whether a tight chamber mouth is good or bad. Come to think of it I didn't know the chamber had a mouth. Maybe you meant throats and got your anatomy mixed up.
Five inch groups at 100 with iron sights is getting the job done.
Steel critters at 200 with a Red Dot, I'll bet you don't miss many.
But prairie dogs at 250? I'd have to think the occasional hit is worth the several misses that preceded the hit.

I once tested my 629-3 with 5" barrel for accuracy. I shot 12 shots in a 3" group, on paper, with my reloads, at 50 yards, while standing unsupported. I probably can't do that anymore, but the revolver can!

be reasonably accurate. I really enjoy
them because of this attribute. In my
opinion accuracy remains the same.

Synthetic rubber grips for handling/control,

decrease muzzle flip. Cylinder Yoke lock-up
is assisted by an integrated ball bearing
detent.

Tight chamber throats are good. My 629 Stealth Hunter had .4285 throats measured with a pin gauge. I shot either Berry's plated bullets or locally cast bullets sized at .430 and both gave outstanding accuracy.
