I just received the S&W 632 that has the power port on it. I had the same model in my hand when it first was made several years agoand I set it back down, knowing S&W would come out with another but without that big hole.
Well, now I want to ask the learned mass, can I get a gunsmith to cut the barrel just in front of the front sight??
No pictures, I have not conquered the great photo bucket disaster!

Oh, with full disclosure I will admit to buying six Ruger revolvers in 327 before I got my hands on this one!!

Why would you want to do that? What is your thought process as to why the port needs to go? FYI I carry a 586 L-comp and C model Glocks as my standard EDC.

Those 3" ported 327 J frames are nice guns and somewhat collectable.

I wouldn't cut one down.

Just use it as is would be my suggestion.

I have a 629 with a 2.5" ported barrel, and the port helps tame the recoil. Plus it doesn't hurt anything.

I wouldn't pay to have a gun ported, and I wouldn't pay to have a gun "un-ported".

I would either take it and accept the port, or leave it and find another option. However, that's me, so you do what you feel is necessary.

Another vote for leaving it alone. Last one I sold/traded went for $1500. Not sure why you want to turn a $1500 gun with appreciation potential in to a $600 "chopped" one. They shoot just fine as they are. Keep it, shoot it, enjoy it. Good luck.

The jury has spoken, it will roar with the power port!! I am now on the prowl for the 632-2.

If I could find a pre-lock Model 631 that I could justify price-wise, I would be sorely tempted to buy it and open the chambers to 327 FM length... that would seem to be pretty close to the gun you seem to envision as well.
Then again, now that I've built Project 616 in the caliber, I'm not 100% sure I would be shooting a little J-frame all that often with full power 327 loads, so could I really justify chasing one down??

Thanks for the suggestion, I will give it a try.

I bought a 632-1 myself recently -- mine has the silver finish -- as I'd wanted to try the 327 Federal Magnum caliber and have the flexibility to shoot the other calibers that the gun can handle. I know there are differing opinions about the value of a port in a 3" barrel, and I'm no expert, but I can tell you that I think the port was helpful in controlling muzzle flip with the magnum loads. Lots of fun to shoot, and the 327 was a beast in that little j-frame. I've never shot 357 Magnum in a J, but the smaller caliber definitely got my attention. Lots of power! I've read that the muzzle velocity on these guns with the 100 grain bullets, even with the port, is still in the 1,300 range. Impressive to me! Hope you enjoy yours as much!

I have been shooting my 632 for about a year now. This is one fine little revolver, really potent as other owners will agree I'm sure. With full power loads, it has a really sharp kick even with the port (get some Pachmayrs). Without the port I can only imagine! Don't chop it! You won't know it is even there after shooting it a few times.
Oh, and I would not sell mine for . . . well, I just would not sell it at all.

Gosh a year went by quickly!! I got all of my 327 magnum revolvers out for a shoot a thon with my daughter who visiting from Alaska.
First the 632 with the power port is great to shoot.

My daughter was concerned about recoil so we shot all of the guns with 32 ACP, 32 H&r mag and then 327. I pulled off one of my training stunts, I loaded each cylinder with a combination of the three and told her just to concentrate on the front sight and a smooth trigger pull. The first 3 or 4 cylinders were 32 ACP and then 32 mag and lastly all bullets were mixed up.
Our adventure was great and we had a good time.

Just to keep the thread current, I did the same teaching technique with brother in law and he went from minute of target to 3 inch st 20 feet. He whipped out his wallet and wanted to buy the 632 but gasped when I told him what it cost.
He did buy a 431 from me with the promise to teach his wife.

Froggie!
Bite your tongue! Rechambering a 631 to an inferior caliber is, is, is just flat AWFUL to contemplate. 🙀🙀🙀

Oh my goodness...

I got my birthday present and scored a 632-2 at the end of November. It has a incredibly hard trigger pull.

I know your feeling. I had one in my hand in the LGS when they first came out. I thought "ugly" and put it down. I now have a 431PD, a 432PD, a 16-4, as well as a few Pre30's and 31-1's. Sure wish I had bought that 632, and I would definitely have left it alone.

Well I have to admit I have more Ruger revolvers in 327 magnum than S&W's.

I hate to say I wish Ruger would produce the SP101 in the Wiley Clapp version in 327 caliber. I really like the size and the sights.
Come on S&W don't let us down!! Oh, I have to answer the phone "This is S&W boss, if you want 327 keep buying Rugers!"

I spent over $1,500 dollars buying two 632's and they are worth it! I got four Rugers for the same price.
