64-5 DAO to DA/SA?

Hello, I traded into a great condition 64-5, has an excellent DAO trigger but I really want the option of SA, I found spur hammers on Numrich but wonder if I switched it out would it screw with the trigger any, forgive my ignorance I am NOT a revolver guy!

Based on past experiences of many forum members, it may drop right in and work fine. The DA sear in the hammer may require minor fitting.....or you could perhaps transfer the sear in the existing hammer, over to the new one.
Remember to do a thorough safety/function check after the install, and you should check the SA pull on the new hammer with a trigger pull gauge. S&W recommends a three pound SA trigger pull.

If you purchase a SA/DA hammer they may require a small amount of fitting, based upon the limited research I've done. I've never tried it myself but a lot of the internals will likely swap fine with minimal effort. If you want to get rid of that DAO hammer let me know!! I had a 64 DAO with an amazing trigger that regretfully sold and I'd like to convert a different model 64 to DAO that I have.

Thanks guys for your helpful replies, I have read mixed stuff on other forums saying I may need a sear as well, I was thinking I just needed a spur DA/SA hammer.

Dmthomp I would have no use for the DAO hammer so I will definitely let you know if I go through with it, don't know if I'm comfortable taking this revolver apart, I'm going to contact a smith friend local to me and see what he thinks about possibly doing the work.

You need to find a post 88 hammer and it would be a good idea to find the trigger that came from the same gun. A little tip, when I did this to my 64-5 I got my parts from a model 10-10. They dropped right in

Have you shot your DAO gun much and how did things go
at the ranges you shot?

You might be surprised that with proficiency in the DAO,
especially with a really sweet trigger, you won't shoot
any better, any tighter, any more precise with a SA
capability.

This is a perfect time to shoot that DAO only a lot and
THEN! pick up a similar model with DAO/SA as a
companion. You know you'll want a second Smith.

Most of the stainless -5s are MIM guns, aren't they. I know the 65-5, 66-5, 686-5 and 629-5 are pre-lock, post-MIM. I would assume the 64-5 is as well.

So a post-88 hammer would not be enough. You would need the current production (no hammer nose) MIM hammer.

edit: nope, was just prowling around gunbroker and the 64-5 is pre-mim, so looks like a pre-97 hammer would be the one

Yes. The 64-5 and 65-5 might have had a MIM trigger at the very end of production but they always had a forged hammer. The -6 was the start of all MIM internals. The MIM trigger will swap with a forged trigger.

I think I'm going to take advice given by Uncle Ed and fire the gun before attempting any mods, the DAO pull is light and smooth, I may just get some nice wood grips and leave it alone!

I had this internal discussion with myself re: my own 64 (1993 ship date). However, since mine is factory I decided to leave it alone and instead just smooth out the trigger pull. I'm glad I did-it's like butter now. It's a favorite shooter of mine and I am quite fond of it.
