Did my routine visit to the LGS the other day and spotted this J in the case. I have the Centennial 342 Ti for my Summer pocket carry. Figured this would make a good Winter coat companion.

Could give a hoot about the engraving. Store owner stated he sold this new to a customer close to a couple of years ago. ANIB Factory fired, all steel .357 Centennial. The clincher was the no lock. Price was reasonable at $599.

Came with all the goodies in a wood S&W presentation case. Unfortunately no outer sleeve. Can't find any info in the SCSW about this. S/N is CSJ95XX indicating 2004 if I'm reading the book correct. Fired case date is 12-05-2011, which is strange as the dash 1 debut is 1996 and dash 2 in 1997. Wonder if this gun sat around the Factory for 15 years before shipping? Sure wish I had the outer sleeve with product info. Anyone know any info on these, I'd appreciate it. Thanks all. Couple of pics and my camera batteries died.

Any members with dash 1 guns I'd love to hear some S/N prefixes. Thanks.

All veterans in our thoughts today. God Bless.

I bought my M640-1 on October 29th, 1996.
CBC is the prefix.
That was my most carried J-Frame for a lot of years. Thought the recoil was pretty bad, until I replaced it with a M340PD that weighs less than half as much. OUCH!

The M640-1 is a great carry revolver.

I'll get it tonight for you, I don't have the gun on me today.

That is very strange. I see that the shell casing envelope is matched to your serial number and the date is in fact 2011. Hmmmm, I'll check my SN tonight and post it.

Jim, Thanks for the info. This is a strange one for sure. Fired shell casing is numbered to the gun and still sealed in the envelope. I opened to inspect it and a Federal .357 case.

I finally got my paws on some Buffalo Bore .38 Spl. SWCHP. That will be my carry ammo. Nice to have a safety cushion of the .357 and be able to use if desired.

It has to be some sort of sample gun or showcase gun, maybe because of the engraving?

I like the BB ammunition too, good stuff in my eyes. As I said earlier, I'll post the letters tonight.

Still, that's a great looking gun and hopefully the mystery gets unraveled.

Man you got a great deal on that gun. Factory engraved, pre-lock, magnum 640 in the factory presentation case for $599 is awesome.

The way I looked at it was I was getting a new no IL 640 for $599. I could give a hoot about the engraving. Matter of fact since it is already scratched up I won't mind carrying it:eek:.

Surely an odd ball though. Yoke is clearly marked 640-1. Serial number dates 2004 and the fired case is 2011. Had to be sitting around the Factory for some reason. Short of a letter I'll probably never know. Not going to bother as this is a work gun.

CBK is mine. I'm the second owner so I don't have the year or test shell, but I do have box and paperwork.

Messer,
You are the man. Thanks a bunch. Didn't cross my mind to look for current production. The gun store owner did say that the original buyer paid over $900 for it. He was keeping a safe queen and never fired it. By the time this is worth anything I'll be long gone, so I'm shooting it.
Thanks again regards Mike

I just recently acquired an engraved 640-1. The prefix is CTC. This is my first Smith & Wesson. I tried a bit of SN research but didn't put much time into it. Can anyone tell me how to date the gun? This is my everyday carry and it is great for appendix carry. If anyone wants to chat I'd love to hear from ya.

Best regards.

Hiker,
Dating these guns is a little tough since they are made on old dash 1 frames. If you bought the gun new I'd pretty much go with the fired shell casing date as the born date. I don't have the book handy to date CTC. My S/N prefix dates years away from the fired shell date.

I've had 4 months with mine. Great carry gun. I don't worry about the finish either as it is already scratched up.

Hi guys, I bought my 640-1 new for $630. I traded my 642 for it. He was asking $840. S&W asks for $919. I have the case, the bullet in the little envelope. Is the info on the envelope what you are looking for?
My serial # is CUUxxxx.

Hey wanted to share a pic and some info. The sn prefix is CTC and S&W tells me it was manufactured on 6/12/12. I shoot and carry mine too.
