642 Model II

640.jpg

I would sell a body part to get back my 640.
Just my .02. :o
Frank.

Your .02 cents is just about the same as mine. :p Had a sweet 640 no dash...one of two guns I regret trading. :(

That is a cool one Mark. That one was not an my radar.....I may have to acquire one for my "collection." But, I gotta admit, the thing that interests me is the fact that it has PC action/trigger, and doesn't have the ILS.

I might have to look in to getting one of those instead of a 640 or 342...:D

Hey, there is nothing wrong with a drawer full of J-frames.....Why limit yourself?:D

Love my 640.

It's physically just a bit too long and tends to 'show' it's grip from my pocket holster. In more ways than one, I'd like to have deeper pockets.

For belt carry, I might jump to a   ...K-frame.

For anyone interested, the original j-frame posted was just released (May 2015) as a Talo, SKU: 10186. Not hearing much about them, but an excellent j-frame snub.

How could you not love a j-frame snub? I found this new 642 II on the Talo site ...not to be confused with the 170 prefix Talo models.

The 'features' are basically:

* rubber/wood inlay grips
* cylinder cut for moon clips
* PC tuned action
* polished, smooth face trigger
* cylinder flutes and release latch polished
* kind of a bead blast finish? differs from a stock 642

Yes, it did remind me of the Wyatt, which is why they're in the photo.

Hoping to get it range-bound next week.

Beautiful gun! Does the new Talo II (sku 10186) have the internal lock? Obviously, yours doesn't - but every picture I've seen of it online has the lock. I contacted S&W, and 2 different CS reps told me that it doesn't have the lock, and never has. However, even the picture of it on their Facebook page has the lock. Very confusing...

Thanks. And yes, I was also very confused about whether it had the IL. Promo photos clearly show it with the IL. Also, later feature lists did not mention moon clips, while earlier photos clearly pictured them.

Just knew I liked the gun and jumped on it.

My SKU 10186 did come cut for moon clips (3 clips included) and no IL.

Hello,

I am looking for the best J frame I can find for carry. I have whittled my selection down to Mark's Talo 642 (10186) and the 640 Pro (178044). Although I prefer stainless steel (640), I am leaning toward the lighter 642 with all the Performance Center enhancements.

Am I missing any other good options? I am passing on the 637 Wyatt Deep Cover due to the "Gunsmoke" logo. Just personal preference.

I appreciate any suggestions and feedback. This will be my first S&W purchase.

Thank you!

I also passed on a "gunsmoke" gun at a great price. Just too many logo's on the gun.
I have both your other options.

The 640 is larger, heavier, and easier to shoot than the alloy frame, but the trade off is ease of carry in the light weight model.

I bought the 640 Pro because of the cool factor. My standard 640 is every bit as accurate.

As for the PC "tuned Action" I have five PC guns and only one did not need any action work to make them perform the way I wanted them.

Thank god for Arkansas stones and Wolff spring kits.

Hello gnystrom,

Thank you for the quick reply.

I have a Beretta PX4 Storm Subcompact 9mm (26 oz) that is a little chunky (width) to carry. Basically looking for something a little easier to carry IWB. The J frames fit the bill. Just struggling between the 640 Pro (23 oz) and the 642 Talo (15 oz). It is a little difficult to make a decision as I would not be able to physically touch the 640 until after an internet purchase.

I totally agree about the "wow factor" for the 640 Pro. Did you get the 178044 with night sights? Seems they are hard to find. Bud's is out on the LE and retail side for a while.

It would be interesting to know what additional work needed to be done to 4 of the 5 five Performance Center revolvers you have.

Hey, partner! Welcome to the Forum. Please allow me to jump in on this older fun thread; you may have read me above. My take, from the standpoint of an LEO: you want the 642 TALO. No, you REALLY want the 642 TALO. IWB is fine, it is my preferred mode of carry. But it's winter and how do I reach my IWB piece under a sweater and outer coat/jacket? It's gotta go in my pocket and the 642 of whatever persuasion is built for pocket carry. When buying a new outer garment, I always check the depth of the side pockets for this reason.

Shame you dislike the 637 Wyatt because the logos turn you off. I own 2 Wyatts and the only thing wrong with them is that I do not yet own a 3rd. Very slick little carry pieces. I've moved on to the .357 M&P 340, but I'll never sell my 637s, 642s and 638. Too much history there. And in some very bad places...

As to modding a PC gun, I would do nothing. I'm not a spring changer. S&W has always made guns to suit the LE market. When it comes to J-frames, they haven't stopped.

Stay safe, partner. Getting uglier out there. Check your 6.

Hello kaaskop49,

Appreciate the very informative post. It confirms my leaning toward the 642 TALO. I needed the 2nd opinion from someone like yourself.

Glad you like the 637 Gunsmoke. It was actually my third choice but decided against it due to the logo.

As a side comment, congrats on the Benefactor NRA membership level! I just moved up to Patron this year.

Old j threads never die.

As Kaaskop mentioned, go for the Talo. I too love my old trusty 642 and would never part with it. Buying today though, the small premium for a Talo/PC/PC tuned is a no-brainer. You get factory tuning, the slim trigger (in some models) and it's set to go out of the box. I wouldn't change a thing ...sometimes grips.

Oh, the 640. Excellent. I live in a tropical climate, so mostly pocket carry. That's the reason I stick with a lighter 1 7/8".

Just one guys opinion. Welcome, have fun shopping!

Hi Mark,

That helps! The 642 TALO it is.

Looks like I will have to go the retail route this time to get the 642 TALO.

642 TALO $468 Retail
640 w/ night sights $600 LE

Might pick up the clip grips from DeSantis like the ones on the 637 Wyatt Deep Cover (Gunsmoke). Do you guys like them?

I agree with the last three posts. The airweight offers more than the 640 Pro. The 640 Pro looks great but the high sights really do not offer much in the way of improved accuracy and because this is purely a SD gun I want light weight and compactness. I use my 340pd on a regular basis.

What did I do to the 4 PC models that I felt needed work? (J-frames) Smoothed the rebound slide and all mating surfaces except the sear, put in a 14# rebound slide spring, 8# hammer spring, re-lubed, and called it a day.

One of them actually went back to S&W because it had severe visible pitting in the flutes of the barrel. Don't think because it says Performance Center on the box it will be perfect. Too many stories in this forum on that topic. They fix them but most should have never made it out of the shop in the first place.

As for the Waytt Gunsmoke, I love the concept and have no problems with anything but logos. As I said, I passed on on Black Friday special that was priced in the low $400 range. Polish that thing clean and then make it matte black and I am all over it.

I think you made the correct choice with the Talo model.

All of you that responded have been a big help. I just needed a few other opinions to confirm my 1st choice of the 642 TALO. Initially I bypassed the TALO as I didn't like the two tone grips. Later I circled back as the TALO had all the extra features and figured I could replace the grips with the DeSantis clip grips or something else. I hate to throw away hard earned money on TALO grips and have no use for them but at least I get the J frame revolver I want. :)

Absolute best price I could find on the 642 TALO is now $459. How does that compare to what you guys paid or saw a few months ago?

re clip grips

Jeff, I changed out the clip grip knock-offs on my Wyatts for several reasons:

1. I found the over-the-belt "shelf to be too short to hold the gun securely in the WB. For a few minutes maybe, not for hours of daily activity.

2. The gun is uncomfortable in the WB with these grips. A thin suede IWB clip pouch adds no bulk and allows comfy carry.

3. The grip is slippery in the hand.

4. Another poster reported recently (and I have found) the grip screw to loosen and allow the grips to come apart and the gun to slip in the hand. Worse, he reported the loose screw interfered with the DA mechanism under the grip. This is his experience, not mine.

Save your $, Jeff. My 2 Wyatt clip grips are sitting in the gun boxes. Check 6.

I didn't see that coming (clip grip concerns). I just assumed that is one of the reasons you went for the 637 Gunsmoke.

I also am a little surprised to hear some have received pitted cylinders from S&W Performance Center. To me, that sounds unacceptable. Especially from the PC. I will definitely look closely at the 642 TALO before taking possession.

Since I just started pricing the 642 TALO, how is the $459 price (includes shipping) that I received from Buds make an offer?
