642 trigger issue

Just got a new 642 this morning, been dry firing it and the trigger sometimes hangs up in the fully back position. It seems like the rebound spring isn't always pushing the trigger forward. When I push on the trigger again, it frees up. If I open it up, what should I look for that might be causing the problem?

Thanks,
Theodoric

Possibly someone clipped a couple of coils off the stock spring, attempting to lightening the pull. Or replaced it with one that is too light. This can result in what you're experiencing. This can cause problems with rapid DA firing also.

On a new gun it is likely that the hand is binding between the ratchet and the frame. Thinning the nose of the hand on the center pin side with a diamond file is one way to fix that. Just cycling the gun will eventually wear down the ratchets to where it doesn't bind any more.

You can confirm this by cycling the action with the cylinder out/open. Open the cylinder, hold the cylinder release to the rear and cycle the action. Does it still bind? If not, Toolguy hit the nail on the head.
Long ratchets.

I would agree with the advice following...... send it back.

Is this a new gun?

If so, call and get a return label and let them correct the problem.

Don't start filing things unless the gun isn't under warranty (it's used and you're not the original owner, and somebody previously "improved" something), and unless you know what you're doing.

It's possible it might be a very simple repair, if you don't mistakenly fix the wrong problem and make it worse. ;)

Great advice guys. It seems to be related to the hand. But I could use some clarity on what exactly needs to be filed down. Just so I understand completely.

Thanks

Probably just dry inside, I'd trickle a drop of lube down the backside of the trigger first.
Pull the trigger back, 'nuther drop down the front and another in the window that the hand sticks through.
Dry fire a few times and see what happens.
If that doesn't help then do what Fastbolt says.

If it's a brand new gun, there may be metal shards or some other gunk in the action. Throughly blast out the action with brake cleaner or gun cleaner and compressed air. Then dump some lube in the hammer recess. Really overlube it. Then try to cycle it a few times and repeat the cleaning followed by less oil. That may clean it up. If that doesn't do it, send it back to Smith.

I'm happy to report that the problem seems to have gone away——so far. I took the handgun apart to inspect and while at it, polished the trigger and sear contact points. After reassembly, the problem disappeared. I won't risk adding a lighter rebound spring though. But after polishing don't need to anyway.
