After several range trips and lots of dry firing with my new 642UC I decided it was time I open it up and see what’s going on.

Normal procedure: Remove grips, capture hammer spring and lift out, remove side plate screws, tap grip frame with soft end of the screw driver, side plate pops loose………

WHAT?? The side plate pops loose like normal, but surprise, the sear falls out on the bench and the sear spring is nowhere, gone! Launched into oblivion!!!! I get that really bad feeling.

My shop floor is not clean and I have lots of clutter all over. I freeze knowing that if I step on it would be ruined. I grab my magnet and start systematically sweeping the area. After an hour I pronounce the spring lost and unfindable. Dang it!

Right off I see that the spring is supposed to be held in place by a shallow grove on the hammer and a hole in the sear. NO dang pin for the sear to go on, it just kinda floats in the hammer with spring tension only! Dang it!

Anyway, fair warning to all, when popping the side plate loose, be aware that the sear spring can go flying in the new 642UC.

I have never seen the inside of a standard 642, is this a standard setup for the sear/hammer assembly?

Was my spring not completely in the retention grove on the hammer from the factory releasing it when the side plate popped loose?
