A friend of mine is selling a 645 for $300. I had a chance to put a mag through it but I had 2 FTEs. I did a little research and I could not find one instance of this happening. I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if so what was done to remedy the problem. It is a beautiful piece of American steel at a good price and I don't mind dumping some money into it. This is my first post on here and all input will be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Some things to check:
Extractor tension weak?
Extractor claw broken or Rounded off?

If he was really a friend you should give him at least $375 to clear your conscience. Worst case would be you might have to pay shipping into S&W, most likely they would repair it for a small charge. Does sound like a worn/damaged extractor.

Buy it! At that price even if you have to send it back for some repairs you will still have less money in the pistol than it is worth. Most likely a small problem like a weak extractor spring or damaged extractor.

I would check to see if its mag problem before you send it to S&W. If he has two mags for the 645 you should be able to tell if one is bad, maybe. The last 645 I got had three mags with it and only one worked. Traded the two bad mags and got two used mags off gun-broker about five years ago and my 645 has been 100%. Hope it all work's out for you and your new toy. The 645 is a great gun.

I have a 745 and a 945. The 745 has the same barrel as the 645. I tend to shoot 185 grain target loads most of the time in these guns, The cases eject nicely but show signs of blow back around the case. This leaves carbon in the chamber. When I switch to hardball I have had failures to eject. The solution is a good chamber cleaning. The chamber carbon build up along with the higher pressure hardball causes the case to stick.

Clean and polish the chamber and the problem may go away.
Otherwise follow the advice of the other posters and check the extractor for chips, tension and debris.

See if you can slide a empty case under the extractor. If it holds on to the case it is good to go.
Nice gun, great price and possibly an easy fix.

Good luck

Thanks T-Bird and Bruce. I'm going to send it to S&W to have all the springs and the extractor replaced. I need them to blast it to get it looking nice and new anyway.

Every 645 I've owned would feed anything. Super pistols! But they're getting a little age on them now. It will likely just need a minor tune-up.

Congrats on an excellent find.

That's a great friend to let you have one for that kind of price!
