I have been weak again. Was in the local pusher's joint last Friday and they had a nice looking 649 in 38 Spc. Just gave it a passing glance and went on my way. Was back to the shop on Tue. to ask a question about another prospective purchase and stopped to fondle the 649 again. Turns out to be a -2. Has rubber grips but not Pacs. According to the book it was probably manufactured in late 92. No box or papers but appears to be in excellent condition. Tight, unabused and seems to be like most of its type, carried but shot little. Both single and double actions are very smooth(possible someone did an action job, but atleast they used good screwdrivers!). I cost myself a little extra by not being able to buy it outright(had to put it on layaway until payday) so I lost some negotiation possition. Anyway, I am into the gun just a little over 4 bills. I know, not a screamin deal but I hope I ain't in too deep. Makes no difference. I wanted it and soon I will have it. Worst case is that I bought to soon!

I do not do auctions so I don't really know how to find things on the various sights. The checking I did do was not very productive. Found a few listed as -2s in .357 but I don't think that is right. Anyway, What are these things selling for in the real world? Remember that I live in SW Wyo. and there isn't another dealer within a hundred miles that even might know what a 649 is or what it would be used for. Could probably tell me anything I wanted to know about tupperware but that ain't where its at for me. So. did I let the bright lights of the showcase cloud my decision or am I OK even if I didn't get a screaming good deal!

Thats about what they go for around here. When I say they I mean steel frame .38Spl. S&W snubbies.
I'd love to find a nice 649-2. It would go well with my 36-7 and 60-7. Those three models and the 49-2 and no dash 640 have all the best improvements on the .38 J frames before the switch to the J magnum frame. They were heat treated for +P use, had the wider 1/8" front sight, and had all tool steel parts. They were made till '96 when the MIM parts and the J magnum frame came along.

I paid less for mine but that was a fairly long time ago.
Bought another 649 (no dash) for about the same as the first one
about five years ago.
I guess I am the only one who likes these guns in my area.

Both are .38 Specials and I figure that's enough caliber for these guns.

Thank you, gentlemen, for the reply to my post. Had no real need for the gun but it flung a cravin on me. I didn't spend money that should have been spent on other things, so all will be well in the end. When the little jewell comes out of the shop it will join my small stable of J frames. An old model 60 that was my primary off duty carry gun during my cop days in the 70s and 80s. A nifty little model 63 Sq b. 4" and now a really clean 649-2. Life is good. GB

you did just fine obtaining your "new" model 649-2. its a great ccw revolver. i have a 649 no dash and wouldnt let go for anything.

Nice little gun!

I bought a 649-2 back in the early 90's and sold it in order to buy a piece of tactical tupperware. Not bashing the block. I still have it and carry it regularly. However, of all the guns I have sold (to buy others - which, fortunately, I don't have to do anymore!) I always regretted getting rid of that 649-2. There was just something about that little gun that I really liked, and was bummed that I sold it in the moment.

Life is good though! And, thanks to this forum, I found a pristine 649-2 in the classified section (thanks, Ed!) and bought it. The revolver looked brand spankin' new! I paid $550 for it. And would do it again in a heartbeat! I could never find one in LNIB condition in my neck of the woods for that price. Best of all, it shoots right on to POA. Plus, it's just a COOL gun!
