I thought I had this down. I was at the OGCA today and had a discussion with a seller. He had a 66-3, 3" barrel for $ 1200, I was very tempted. He also had a 66-1 2 1/2 inch with pinned barrel(supposedly NIB but with ring on cylinder for $ 850). I asked him if it also had a recessed cylinder. He replied that all 66-1's had recessed cylinders. I told him that I have seen a lot of pinned but not recessed 66-1's. Am I having another senior moment or ??

I have seen lots of 66-1s that were either (1) recessed but not pinned or (2) not recessed but pinned. It's the parts bin effect. I've never gone looking for 66-2s, but I'd bet that there are 66-2s that have pinned barrels or recessed cylinders, too.

I can tell you only what I know to be fact. I bought a M66-1 brand new in the early 80s and it was both pinned and recessed. Last December I bought another 66-1 and it is p&r also. I do agree with VM.

A friend and fellow forum member has a 66-1 that is recessed but not pinned. It must be a transitional model.

I've seen several 66-1s with one feature or the other, but I have not seen a 66-2 either pinned or recessed.

This could similiar to my M66-1 with the overstamp -2 on it that is pinned but not recessed. Yet my M66-1 4 inch is Pinned and Recessed. So I would say all -1 's are pinned and recessed.

All of my 66-1's are P&R and that is true for probably more than 98.6757% of all 66-1's - BUT I have seen many (more than a handful) later (1982-1983) transition period 66-1's in all barrel lengths that are either pinned, but NOT recessed or recessed but NOT pinned. This is also true for 629 (no dash's), 27-2's, 65-2's, 13-2's and 19-4's that I have seen from this era. I have not seen this in the 28-2's, 29-2's, 57's or 58's - but that does not mean that it is not there.

One of the delightful anomalies that is S&W...

The only absolute rule about S&Ws is that there are almost always exceptions to every rule.

Especially when things were transitioning. S&W wants to make money. If the engineers change something but S&W has a 100 or a 1000 parts left over or more, they are not going to throw them away. Parts counts seldom match. Kind of like hot dogs and buns.

+1. There was one on G-broker 4-6 weeks ago that was a 66-1 NO PINNED but recessed.

Very true. S&W isn't unique in that regard, but it's more visible, for a variety of reasons.

All bets were off in the early 80's.

Also during that same timeframe, S&W moved the logo from the sideplate to the left side of the gun under the cylinder release on K frames and L frames. Later they also did the N frames the same way.

Late 19-4's, 66-1's, 10-7/8's, 15-4's all had the S&W logo on the left side, and some of which were missing either pinned or recessed features or both.

Some 66-2's and 64-3's had pinned barrels, I own a 64-3 with a pinned barrel and have seen pinned 66-2's.

Thanks, I thought that I have seen a few 66-1's that were not P&R'd. Either way still great guns.

66-1 recessed but not pinned

I have a 66-1 in the higher serial number range 98K9xxx that is apparently a transitional model, as it is recessed but not pinned. It is a snubby with a fantastic trigger, and I have sold a few pinned and recessed but kept this one.
