What do you guys think? Is it a buy at $450 non matching grips no box etc. Good-very good condition! Thanks

I bought a 66-2 in like new condition for $450.00 out the door and thought that it was a good deal.So a P&R gun in very good condition has to be worth that. Are the grips K frame targets?

Maybe I should get on it! It's in pretty nice condition it looks like. It does have kframe targets!

I saw a 66 no dash with stainless sights LNIB that sold for $750 last week on Gun Broker. In my opinion the stainless sights on very early models can make the no dash an interesting collector piece.
On another question, I read an interesting thread somewhere on here that listed the dash dates that I copied. By appearances it looks like the -1 would be more rare than the no dash.

66.........(1970) Introduced at K949100
66-1......(1977) Move gas ring from yoke to cylinder
66-2......(1982) Eliminate cylinder recess and pinned barrel
66-3.. (1986) New yoke screw, floating hand, and hammer nose bushing
66-4......(1994) New rear leaf sight, drill and tap frame, change extractor, and Uncle Mike's synthetic grips.
66-5......(1998) Change to MIM hammer and floating firing pin
66-6...............(2002) Introduction of the Internal Lock

Anyone else? He said it's 90%

I picked up a 66 no dash with Magna stocks for $460 recently. No box, no tools. I would definitely jump on the one you posted as long as it looks good to you in person. They are great guns!

Would you consider it a collector/decent investment? I've got a 686 to shoot!

The gun is going to keep it's value because it is a popular carry and field gun,but I don't think that a 90% gun is in the collectors catagory.Just putting in my 2 cents.Buy it and shoot it!

If it had SS sights, the original box, the original football stocks, tools, paper work, etc., I've seen truly 90% guns go for $650 to $700. I would deduct for every deficiency the pistol has from that ideal base list. Without seeing the 66 I would say that price is an extremely good value that should only appreciate in value....

BTW, I've seen several brand new, all original in the box very early 66s (SS sights) sell for $1000 recently and the interest in this particular model is growing.

JMHO.....

$550 is a very good price for a P&R Model 66. $450 is a GREAT price - if the lock-up etc., is good.
The Model 66 is a hallmark revolver in the S&W line, yet the wife and I don't have one. Strange....

KPK - where did you say this gun could be found?

I can't tell about the grips being original - as targets were not, generally, numbered to the gun at the time this gun was shipped. The gun looks to be in good shape. If function is up to par, $450 is a good price for a 4" Model 66 - at least around these parts.

Regards,

Jerry

I don't see it being a collector gun unless it's mint with box, tool kit and paperwork. It would be a great shooter and that is a very good price. I paid $450 for a model 67 which is the same gun chambered for 38 special with stainless steel rear sight and $550 for a model 66 with stainless rear sight both in excellent shape but I still considered them shooters as they weren't mint.

I would say jump on it. I bought a 66-1 4" with wear and carry wear on the target grips for 425 in 2008. These guns and the model 19s are becoming more valuable as collector interest increases. My 66-1 is very accurate and points like it is and extension of my hand. I would not pass it up at that price. JMHO

Hey guys thanks for the help! Looks like at $450 it'd be a hell of a deal. I kind of figured it would, you see them non P&R going for $500 and up it seems like, in good shape. I'm meeting the guy tomorrow to check it out and make my final decision. He lives about 100 miles away from me and I'm meeting him at a gunshow in OKC, OK. I'll let you know what I do. I'm hoping to stumble on another decent deal at the gun show too...

Even at 90%, jump on it. Smith will never make them again with the 'L' frame to replace it. I have one.......it is my primary home defense gun. It was my new issued department gun back in 1976, which I was allowed to buy back after we switched to 40 Glocks. Department sold it to me for $125..... I would have given them twice that much.

While I prefer my 686 as a regular shooter, the 66 remains IMO the perfect carry magnum, especially in a 4 inch barrel. I have magnas on it now so the wife can (and does) handle it well for any necessary home protection.
