The trigger stop on my 686-3 doesn't reach the trigger … really!!
I've tried every 're-position' I can think of and it just won't stick out far enough to engage the back of the trigger when the trigger is pulled rearward. My old Mod. 14 was easily adjusted with never a problem. I know it's a nit, but I really like the feel of the trigger not moving after it releases. Any ideas for repair? Will S&W send me a new one?
THANKS,
John

OLDSTER, I don't know how to answer your questions.....
Apologies,
John

I think what Oldster is saying is that he (and I for that matter) do not remember ever seeing a trigger stop on any L frame. They pretty much went out with all the revolvers in the 70's although I still remember the occasional 66 with the slot still behind the trigger. The trigger stops were meant for precision target shooting like a model 14 and were seen as something to go wrong on duty guns and were often removed from revolvers used for "serious work" ( much like the current day locks). Are you referring to a set screw in the trigger face? If so, that was a common after market or home gunsmithing addition.

trigger stop

Armorer951, those trigger stops look like the one that is currently in my 686-3. My gun does have the slot, obviously, and when I take off the side-plate, there indeed is that small black screw that holds in the trigger stop that is currently in there. Am wondering if one of yours (which look exactly like mine) would make any difference (?). I would gladly pay you for shipping at the very least (just to try one of yours).... I'm not optimistic, but it's worth a try. If you tell me how to PM you (I'm not forum knowledgeable) I'll send you my address. If that doesn't work, I'll just have a buddy make me one that reaches....
p.s. CAJUNLAWYER and Oldster.... I had no idea my 686 is indeed an aberration.... seemed commonplace to me.
p.p.s. FYI.... I was just thinking about trying some bullseye competition locally, and being a very old person, was thinking about using a pistol that I was most comfortable with and some of my mild .38Spl. wadcutter loads .... I still have the STAR bevel base WC heads from the 70's. Don't want to modify the gun for any reason.....

Trigger stop on a 686 ??? Am I missing something ??

My 686-3 has the slot and stop as the OP's has -also, like his, it doesn't extend far enough forward to stop the trigger immediately after it releases. I'm not going to try to change it, however.

Regards,
Andy

Informative thread.:) I learn something every day, and this is no exception. My 15-2 and 15-3 have the factory trigger stop, but I'd never heard of it on an "L" frame. Heck, if the slot is there, why not give it a whirl. Armorer 951 will send you one.??:D

I never knew a thing called a trigger stop existed. I'll add a picture here later showing you the thing I call a "black rubber squishy" that makes my pre-owned 686 one of my favorite revolvers. It has a few small mods that make it seem like someone with Bullseye knowledge did some quality smithing on it. It has a--presumably factory--silhouette sight on it and that was the big attraction for me when I bought it on GB. I didn't know it had any other modifications until I picked it up at the LGS. It's a fun to shoot revolver.

[added later]
Well, my "black rubber squishy" turned out to be a rubber tipped set screw tapped through the trigger (much as described above). Coincidentally my frame is also a 686-3 and has a slot in the frame behind the trigger.) The Bullseye features I mentioned were the Bill Davis grips and a ball bearing latch on the yoke. I don't suppose the "JAW" inscription is a known marking?

I own two 686-3s, a 6" I bought new and a 2 1/2" purchased used some years back. The 6 incher has a trigger stop installed. The 2 1/2" has the slot but no stop.

I also have two other 686s, a 4" ND and an 8 3/8" -4. The ND has a slot but no stop. The long barrel -4 does not have the slot. I'm guessing this feature was dropped with the -4. I checked the SCSW but did not see a reference to deleting the trigger stop.

The back of my trigger is also slotted / hollow. Could the presence of a factory stop depend upon the trigger installed at the factor?

trigger stop

Thanks for all the replies..... I'm beginning to think that the early 686's (from -3 back) were slotted but probably were not 'meant to be' with functional trigger stops. Since this is technically my wife's gun, I've decided to ignore that trigger stop (as I have for the past 20 or more years). I took it out to the range today and realized that at my age, I could never hold steady enough to really be a competitor in the local league.... the I 'benched' the 686 (6 inch bbl) and realized that if I were 40 years younger, me and this gun could be winners :-).
Thanks again for all the interest.... I'm gonna happily maintain my position in mediocrity.
John
