686-4 hand cannon

Well, this thread got the better of me and I went back to the pawn shop to have another look at the 586 I mentioned. She ain't perfect, but neither am I---so we should make a pretty good pair.

After a little negotiation (drumming up all the sad/beaten down looks I could muster) with the shop Manager, I was able to get out of the shop with the 586 for what I thought was a decent price. I cleaned the old girl up a bit and put her in the safe last night. I snapped a quick picture on the dining table and thought I would share her with you since you all inspired me to go back and rescue her from the young lady who seemed to hit every piece of glass on the display case when pulling pistols in/out to show people.

Congrats, looks very nice!

Thanks, guys. I got an eye-roll and headshake when I walked in the house with the pistol. Shifting of blame to you guys was very ineffective!!!

I still like those stainless pistols, too.

You see ... That's precisely why I love my dog. He never judges me when I come home with another shiny toy.

Also, he can't roll his eyes & he only shakes his head when he's got his tire in his mouth. :)

Well Mr. Brown this pistol has a problem.... no big deal ... we won't go backwards to woe is me buying a defective classic pistol.... but going forward, I think the cylinder is peened'... I can hang my fingernail on 5 of the cylinder notches . The cylinder doesn't want to release from the frame lock-up on two cylinders... on the older revolvers I have. ... non have this level of peening..

I certainly hope you find someone with the expertise to repair that problem, and that it isn't too expensive.

Best of luck.

I really like the gun!

My wife always brings home new shoes for herself and I'm sick of tripping over them. So I don't feel guilty anymore about buying more guns. We have the perfect marriage!

I have built up a pretty good immunity to the eye-rolling and head shaking!!! Since I have survived a number of them, it is almost like a sort of positive reinforcement that lets me know that we are still doing well.

Tell the wife that owning certain revolvers is far more important in life than paying the mortgage.

This scarce 686-3 was a gun show find. Have yet to put a decent scope on it and replace the original Combat grips for hunting.

That is a sweet looking hunk of metal and wood right there!!!

Those rings almost look like they just need a kitchen broom mounted in them to just clean up the remnants when done shooting.

Took a piece of brass and peened the notches until I couldn't hang a finger nail on the burrs. The notch with the black marker on it was the worst one. Went from two locking up the cylinder from releasing, to the worst one barely sticking. Removed the side plate to find a dirty mess. Maybe when it's all cleaned up it'll function like it should...

Leave it to ole' misswired.... wound up with the ugliest hawg leg picture in his own thread:D
One of these days I'm gonna get a purty' pistol:)

misswired,

I love it when someone has the fortitude/guts to solve a problem themselves. It looks like you are making things much better. Get her slicked up and running like a champ!!!

That grime was anchored in a glue-like substance, Qtips and cleaners would only smear it around. Fine grit paper was the only thing here to remove it. Hoping that goo was preventing the cylinder release plunger from fully extending.

Took less than a minute to find that tiny spring and plunger from the back of the release bar.... heard it ricochet off the computer screen.... someone must be smiling down on me.

If you haven't already gotten all of the gunk removed from inside the side-plate....you might try "automotive brake cleaner" spray. That stuff will dissolve and clean things quite well. Just do not allow it to contact plastic or rubber.....metals only! memtb

Good Lord, those revolvers are HUGE!

Aren't they something to behold though? If you look at an 8 3/8's long enough, and give your mind and eye time to adjust, to.... Take In..... the majesty of it; then suddenly you look at a 4 or even a 5" tube and it's like "nah, nah, nah man, that'sss not enough barrel". Lol

Yep!! I'm stuck in town all weekend; brought the revolver, some tools and CLP/Ballistol. Had to go get sandpaper, Qtips and brake cleaner when that mess was discovered. Used the clp and 1000grit paper to break it up; then hosed it with brake cleaner.
Lightly lubed with the ballistol. Got it reassembled but it's still sticking when releasing that one cylinder notch. More tinkering on that notch tomorrow.... then plenty of shooting Monday.

misswired, if you continue having problems with that stop notch, you might start a thread in the Gunsmithing forum about your problem. You will have an excellent chance of one of the guys here that are very good with smithing look at your thread and give some advice. Folks like Chief38 or steelslaver or Hondo44 seem to be very knowledgeable about fixing Smiths.
