I have always liked the 686 Mountain gun. Heck, who doesn't?

Edited Sept. 2015 .. .. ..

Another Mountain Gun Barrel .. Now what ??

Smith & Wesson Mountain Gun barrel 686 : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

I suppose I'm going to have to look for a 686 orphan as a donor gun.

Should I convert a square butt ? ?

So I recently found a 4'' 686=4 at a local show. All forged bits
just the way I like them.
CAN serial prefix January 1996 production.

Then 2 weeks ago this barrel pops up on Gone broker.......

It is a 686 barrel not a N frame barrel.

I only had to fight off Magnum Mark to win it.
If not for him it probably would have been cheaper.

Wow $300. for a barrel .

It arrived this afternoon so I took a picture.

I like the way the under lug is 'melted' .

So then I get to work. Piece of cake.

With his older brother, the 3'' 686-1 . .

Good luck

Very nice. I like it
I dunno how you feel about 7-holers but the only thing I'd wanna do is make it a + model, but doubt that I would unless just fell into a cylinder

WHY HAVE 6 WHEN YOU CAN HAVE 7 SHOT ? ? ? A 7TH ROUND CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE---ESPECIALLY AGAINST AN ASSAILANT WHO HAS COUNTED YOUR SHOTS. S&W FITTED A 7 SHOT CYLINDER TO MY NO-DASH 686 SNUBBY FOR $114.00, APPROX 3 YRS AGO. I'M SURE THAT PRICES MUST HAVE GONE UP, BUT THAT WAS VERY REASONABLE AT THE TIME…..

I think it is a 7 holer. Nice job Allen. What did you have to do to fit the barrel. I have a mtgn 686 and every time I pick it up I realize why I own it. It just feels so right. Theo:)

I wish I could 'like' this more than once. L-frames truly are beautiful with a tapered barrel. It's a pity S&W doesn't produce these anymore.

When the lock notches line up with the flutes, there are an odd number of chambers.
See the comparison photo in original post.

Best,
Rick

That is right cool

Did you take photos while doing the barrel swap? If so, could you post them please?

Well, no I didn't take photos.

As to removing the original barrel I have found a relatively simple method.

I use a nylon head dead blow hammer and literally beat the old barrel off.

I remove the grips, and the cylinder. I install the yoke and sideplate screw.

I support the frame on a table on top of a book and carefully hit the
underlug to unscrew the barrel.

Installing the new barrel is just the reverse.
Supporting the frame from the other side I beat the barrel into place.

So, that is why I do not post photos of me banging on the
barrel with a hammer.

Good luck,
Allen

Magnum Mark was just making sure that you paid a "fair" price for the rare barrel. He has done the same to me. I will never bid on one of his listings.

Nice work. I found a 686 mtn gun years ago at a gun show with a red post on patridge front sight. It and a 696 are the only L's I like.

...never did "bond" with L-frames....guess I had spent too many years with Ks... I have held a couple of the 686 MGs however and if I ever find one reasonably priced will buy it...

That said I do own one L...a 686-7 .38 Super...wonderful gun...
