686+ 4" NO RIFLING!! Please help

Unbelievable that a new gun could leave a multi million dollar factory like that. I guess that's why I stick to vintage Smith and Wesson's. Times have changed.

Everyone is given....

I find it amazing that a bunch of alleged S&W fans would believe a guy with no pictures and a freshly-made account.

Everyone is given the benefit of doubt until proven otherwise, which usually isn't very long. I don't get excited I just tell them the only way to handle it is to call S&W. Then we never hear from them again.

No, times haven't changed. Unrifled barrels occurred
in the "vintage Smith & Wessons" as well. But by
now those and other defects are mostly gone from the available
pool of older guns.

Go back and read the posts about unrifled revolvers and
a rifle.

If I was the OP I wouldn't give a (expletive) about the "smoothbore revolver" paranoia some of you are trying to instill in them. The 686 as manufactured has not been defined by law as a "smoothbore revolver"...so in that sense the LGS did not sell the OP a smoothbore revolver, nor did the OP purchase a smoothbore revolver. He/she purchased a 686 that was defective. Assuming that the OP did get a "lemon" revolver, he/she has enough issues to deal with and should go through the normal return process without getting sidetracked by legalistic Bravo Sierra which is both unnecessary and unhelpful.

I always thought about making a revolver for shot shells using a bore sized barrel and a couple very shallow grooves that had one twist in 50 foot. No rule saying how deep or rate of twist.

They guy bought a gun in good faith believing he was purchasing a completely legal gun from a well know manufacture. Manufacturing screw up. None involved had any criminal intent what so ever. It would take an completely richard headed person to prosecute and the case would go no where. If I was charged for this first words out of my mouth, right after lawyer, would be jury trail.

I've been on this and other forums for years and seen these kinds of posts all too often. Quite frankly, we're not going to see any photos. We're not going to hear from the OP either...

That is one of those things that SHOULD NOT be possible, but since final inspections are (as far as I know) purely human if you got a "Monday morning" or "Friday evening" gun, you never know. IF you do enough of anything it will get screwed up once in a while.

That's why, back in the old days, they used to tell you to not buy a car that had been assembled first thing Monday morning (hangover) or last thing Friday night (want to go home) as it would be much more likely to have missed errors. It might even be true.

I also avoided cars with manufacture dates the day before Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, 4th of July, and the whole week around New Years... The last two cars me and the wifey have bought; A Jeep Rubicon & a Ford Explorer "Sport"... the date of manufacture on the frame doesn't have the day of manufacture... I pointed it out to both the Ford and Jeep dealer(s) who just played dumb; or maybe they just were! The label on the frame just says May of 15' or June of 15'... I know why they did that!!!

As to the OP's question as to why/how the no rifling happened and is this typical of S&W. In one word, "NO", this is NOT typical of S&W. However, every manufacturer is capable of producing a "****" every now and then. I've seen AR-15 barrels that looking like the insides of a sewer pipe from a well know manufacturer in South Carolina. Fabrique National to be exact. And they are a stellar manufacturer. It happens and you as the end user are the last line of QA/QC in the production line. Smith will issue a RMA via email and it's pretty much instantaneous. Contact them Monday morning if you still haven't received an RMA label. Smith is a stand up manufacturer and will fix this problem!

I do not wish to make this thread any more quarlsome but ..

If you post here that your granddad liked white wall tires on his Ford Galaxy you should expect a thorough discussion of the Galaxy's transmission gears and the whole drive line up to the air filter. In this thread that would include all ways Galaxys do not meet current laws. With that in mind ---
The barrel is screwed into the frame using a tool that engages the rifling. If there was no rifling, how did they assemble the gun?
S&W has not yet made Model 686s with two piece barrels so the original poster's barrel was not screwed in with a tool that engages the rifling.

I am still hoping to read he did not recognize ECM rifling and his Model 686 shoots great.

Daryl17, whether or not you ever post pictures, welcome to the forum.

Go to the dealer with alacrity, have them help you examine it. One of two things will happen - you will learn that your new shooter ignorance caused confusion, which has happened to many, or that this is a significant "oopsie", which has happened to a few. If the latter, the dealer should be falling all over themselves to snag that gun, and return it to S&W with all the speed they can muster, and the problem is out of your hands.

New to forums i apoligieze in advance. Recent i purchased a NIB 686 + 4". It has absolutely zero rifling! Im not new to guns just wheelies. I called smith and pretty much she didnt believe me and said they would send a return shipping label. That was almost two weeks ago and havent recieved it yet. I purchased this over ruger cause i wanted a superior product. Is this what i should expect from S&W? I know shame on me ( and LGS) fpr not noticing it when i purchased it but im lokking for knicks and scratches and to see how she lines up. What im not looking for is to see if my pistol is legal to possess. Just curious if anyone has heard of similar situations and any advice on how to get it fixed in a timely manner? Please and thank you

No, this is not "what you should expect" from S&W, but it has happened before. And, not just with S&W.

Within the last 6 months, I personally saw a SIG P320 with absolutely NO rifling in the barrel. Of course, SIG stepped up with a shipping label, and they fitted a new barrel (per the repair technician, his words, not mine), test fired, and returned directly to the owner, all at no charge. Oddly, that P320 had already gone back once for the "voluntary upgrade" and apparently, no one caught it until it came back, and was fired for the first time by the owner, who thought the groups seemed to big. Upon looking, he realized what was going on. Sent me pics after I did not believe him. Sure enough, no rifling.

Posted on the SIG Talk forum, and a swarm of people called he and I everything in the book (liar was the nicest thing said of us, accused of photo shopping the pics, etc.), all because those folks just refused to believe their favorite brand had such a glaring screw up.

In any event, S&W will make it right.

SIG P320 pics attached. The one WITH rifling is for comparison. SIG's work order is also shown.

Illegal?

If a semi-auto doubles because of an internal defect or wear, the owner would not be prosecuted even though the gun discharges more than once for a single pull of the trigger.

We forget that not only must you be in possession of an illegal weapon but that possession must also be willful. A federal prosecutor is not likely to take on this case.

Had the same problem a year or so back with the same gun, 686 with 4" barrel. Mine had a faint hint of rifling in the bore. 115 grn and 125 grn bullets were all over the place. 158 grn shot 11 inches to the left with the rear sight as far right as i could get it. After shooting everything i could find to try and find something that would shoot accurate i noticed that what little rifling that was there was about gone. Called S&W sent it in, came back with new barrel with good rifling in it + a new cylinder. Shoots good now.
