I'm new to this forum as a result of being challenged by my father that is retiring law enforcement. I have taken a different career path, which I believe always disappointed him, so I didn't have the time to focus on guns and ammo like he does daily. Knowing this, when I reached out to my father and asked what would be the greatest gift anyone could get him for his retirement. His response was a 686 dash 4 plus 7 shot with a 4 inch barrel. While he stated telling me how this was his favorite gun and how he should have never sold it but times were tough when, I was younger, so he sold off some of his gun collection to help make ends meet, I was mentally repeating 686-4 plus 7 shot 4" barrel over and over so I wouldn't forget it. Which leads me to my title of the thread because I can't find one anywhere.

I'm running out of time and would greatly appreciate any assistance locating one. I will try meet whatever premium anyone with one of these is willing to sell it for.

Thanks in advance.

I just scoured 6 pages of Gunbroker for you....

The 686-4 with 4" barrel is hard enough to find, but add the +Plus designation in addition, and you have a difficult mission to fulfill!!

You are a good son to search for this, but you may be up against a tough one!

thanks so much for trying to help.... completing my engineering degree wasn't as difficult and frustrating as the attempt to accomplish this task. I've had more sleepless nights searching for this than I ever did in school.

I think I might have self inflected OCD on myself

I don't want to get your hopes up, but I'm pretty sure I saw on at the Scheels Sporting Goods store in Springfield, Illinois, Saturday. They had three 4 inch 686's in the case. Two were $799, the third was $779. I couldn't see them well, but pretty sure the $799 ones were the 7 shots.

Thanks for the information I called them right away and unfortunately the ones you saw were new dash 6's with locks.

I'll keep trying......

Evening Jaxxon686;

Good luck with your quest.

I believe Smith only made that 7 shot 686-4 for about a year or so. (those things are difficult to find).

One of my local shops had one a while back & wanted $1250.00 for it. It sold quickly but I'm not sure of the final selling price (it sold real quick so probably pretty close to asking price)

One place you can try is Cabela's (used guns)-- once in a while they will list one but I'm not sure if a used gun can be shipped in from out of state on from store to store.
Problem with Cabela's is you will pay very dearly for their used guns.

Sorry. I didn't understand the significance of the dash 4. Good luck in your search.

Becoming a registered user of the major gun auction sites and doing a regular search for model 686 may find you one. Many sellers will list it as a 686 and you may have to ask questions or for photos to positively ID it as a -4.

The bolt notches on the cylinder of a 7-shot 686 line up with the flutes, so that (along with the absence of the lock and the old-style separate cylinder frame stop on the left side) will narrow down your search. Good luck!

S&W will convert a 6-shot to a 7-shot. Then you turn around and sell the 6-shot cylinder for $100, the whole thing will be less than you might think. Call and get a quote. While it's at S&W they'll check it out & pick through the action and fix/replace anything that needs attention. It's a nice little tune up. Something to consider. 6-shots are a whole lot easier to find.

Jaxxon686,

I sold my 686-4 Plus with 4 inch barrel to a Forum member friend. Otherwise, I would sell it to you, so you could give it to your Father.

As suggested, place a WTB ad here on the Forum. Maybe on Armslist too. You never know...To most of us, it's just another great revolver to have in our collection. To you, it means a lot more, and you might be able to shake one loose.

I have seen, in person, one other 686-4 Plus with 4 inch barrel, within the last 4 years.

Keep looking with hope. They are out there.

To the OP:

I wish I could help you. I have one on my hip as I type this, but it's my home defense gun and unfortunately not for sale. As others have said, if you watch the auction sites and the Classifieds here, perhaps one will show up soon.

Best wishes,
Andy

If you cant find a 686-4 you are not looking hard enough. Dont pay more than 575.

Edit- guess i should of read more. Dime a dozen as best that saying can ring true.
