Well I did my homework and hope I did okay, 5Wire seems to track the pricing on these pretty closely. And based on the threads I saw from him I think I got a fair deal. 2017 thread said the average was $1285 as I recall, but that was I assume the high range with box and documents.

My local pawn guy has had this 686-5 Pre-Lock Mountain Gun, 7 Shot that I've been aggravating him about for a year or so (his personal gun, not store inventory). Today he broke down and sold it to me...after a little friendly bickering I ended up with $865 in the gun, no box or documents, just the gun. But what a beauty. He even threw in 2 sets of Altamonts and of course the original Goodyear's that came on it. It's a CCP serial number so near as I can tell it's a 1997 ship date, have to confirm with Roy later.

Might take my Combats off my 686-1 and see if they fit okay, but from what I've read the rubber grips may be best for range time.

Your opinions are valued and much appreciated!

Well I just sold my 625 mountain gun in .45 acp (supposedly one of the most desirable calibers) on GunBroker for $830. I bought the gun a year ago for $800 and you would have thought i got the deal of a lifetime by the response of the forum. All this to say the price you paid for the 686 may be spot on! They are a real nice revolver. Enjoy it.

I suspect that your price was fair, if not low. I had to sell mine a few years ago for cash flow reasons, which was ... unfortunate.

I don't know how fair the price was objectively, but I like it! If you're happy, then you got a good deal.

To be perfectly honest with you neither do I. So many factors can affect price on the same gun, location, condition, heartbeat of the buyer (and seller), desire, accessories, stupidity, cash flow...the list is longer than my feeble imagination can go.

But it's a beauty and I like it. Happy, Happy, Happy :D

I bought mine (LNIB and shot very little) at Wanenmachers from original owner for $750 app. 2 years ago IIRC. But 3 of my gun buds have since bought similar condition ones in the $1300+ range.
I think you did good because even though maybe not collector grade, they're one of mine and my buds favorite L frames. I won't be surprised if you like it even better the more you shoot it.
ETA:
After taking a closer look at your pics, you may not have the box but condition looks pretty clean to me. If you start having buyer's remorse, lemme know, I'll give you your money back. ;)

Oddly enough the laser engraving on the S&W Logo seems to be faded much more than the barrel markings. But I bought her as a shooter, so doesn't matter too much to me. Then again handling would likely be more where the logo is located.

i would probably snatch another if i ran into one for that price. i bought mine brand new in 97, paid $485. ive been hard up for cash the last several years and was considering selling it for $1200. i don't need to worry about selling it now and it would've been very regrettable if i did. my serial number starts with CCM

While I have no "need" for one, I think that the 686 MG is one of the best balanced .357s S&W has ever made and would gladly buy TWO at the price you paid....can't remember the last time I saw one sell for under a GRAND but it has been a long time... A 3" 66 and a 5" 27 are the only other guns in it's class....

Since you are a couple hundred ahead, maybe you could give your friend a bottle of his favorite liquor....

I had one for many years and traded it away to obtain a 696 no dash. I like the 3"guns and have a 3" 66-2, 3" 686CS-1 and the 3" 696 .44sp. I stole the Mtn gun when I got it and should have kept it. I have never seen another one in my area, ever.

The cheap sorry lazer engraving has totally disappeared from my 629 mtn gun and my 686 mtn gun........Doesn't effect the shooting. Shown 686. Purchased in 2010 for $450.

I remember when they first came out, could've bought one brand new for less than $500. Seriously thought about buying one to take the place of my 19-7 for work, but didn't because money was tight (only took home $250 a week). I have only seen a couple in person since, the last about 5 years ago. If I ran across one now for less than a grand I'd grab it in a heartbeat.
