I would like to change out the red ramp front sight to Fiber Optic. I'm thinking of doing it myself due to the lack of gunsmiths in my area.
What size rollpin punch do I need, what size drill bit and anything else you can tell me. I fitted a barrel to a 1911 so I sure I can do this with a little guidance and patience.
I know I'll need a drill press. The replacement sight is a S&W FO made by SDM. Thanks

I've been trying, unsuccessfully, for the last 3 months to do the same thing. You will need a #54 drill bit, and a roll pin punch that is slightly smaller. The #54 bit measures .055, I believe. Good luck.

I have read about all the problems people are having. Gunsmiths are a rare breed in the Seattle area and it amazes me how difficult it is to find some to change out a little front sight. I may just put a scope on it.

Most folks have no problem accomplishing this task. I changed the front sight on an old Ruger Security Six in 15-20 minutes using a piece of broken drill bit for a punch. If you can lay hands on the right equipment, the job SHOULD be pretty simple.
