Hello,
I am rather new to the forum, and I would like to know if there are any websites on "how to clean a S&W 686 revolver". I know how to clean the barrel, cylinder, and ejector, but what about the trigger, hammer, and their associated pins and springs, and etc. An all-out clean and lube.
thank you, haka

If you don't know much about the revolver, you need to get the book "THE S&W REVOLVER" by Jerry Kuhnhausen. Read it from cover to cover and then we can help you and it will answer your Question. Other wise shoot and have fun with it. Leave the gutts alone till you get your book. PLEASE - don't take me wroung, everyone here would help you do anything you want, but you need to know what we are talking about.

thanks bullseye,
I'm gonna look to see where I can get the book. I am surprised it is so difficult in this "info age" we live in to find material. Although I
did get these website on another forum:

the first one is very good, and more detailed. The 2nd one is just basic cleaning. I feel that I am quite adept at mechanical devices, after all, I have taken apart the dreaded Ruger Mark lll to the bone, cleaned, and reassembled it. Not many have accomplished that. I did the same with my Beretta M9. I like diving in, don't scare me 'cause I know I can do it.
Thanks again, tom UWUA LOCAL 223 DETROIT

I recommend the Kuhnhausen shop manual for SW revolvers. Brownells probably has it.

I called "Heritage Gun Books" and they told me they would not recommend this book to me because my Smith is of recent vintage, that of having a different firing pin. Will this book still have good info for me, or is it a waste of time?

thanks, tom

Get it, you still get the basic things from it. The new firing pin is a cake walk after you learn the rest

That is genuinely bizarre. It is clearly the best book for SW revos. The firing pin variation is trivial.

Another good option is the Jerry Miculek video on S&W Trigger Jobs. Do NOT do the trigger job until you are well versed in stoning metal parts. But, it is a step by step video on disassembly and reassembly in addition to the trigger job instructions. It has been available from Midway and Brownells in the past.

This site has a FAQ section, however it is still under construction with the change of categories.
