686 no dash

Picked this up today.

Got a 686-4, 6 inch barrel on lay-a-way at local gun store.

I carried one of those shortly after our agency authorized the .357 Magnum for duty use. It stood up to many hundreds of Federal 125 grain .357 Magnum jacketed hollow point bullets and is still tight and in-time. I was fortunate to obtain one shortly after they were introduced. Many on this Forum prefer the iron-sighted version, the Model 681. I preferred the target-sighted version as my eyes picked up the sights better.

You are very fortunate. Pointed that at many perps. Fortunately never had to utilize deadly force.

I had one like it that caught the eye of a friend of mine. He really, really liked it and was a very good friend. (You can see where this is going. LOL) I sold it to him. He made me a very generous offer which I accepted, cash plus a Beretta 92 which I never liked. I have been missing it ever since.

Every once in a while I would look on Armslist or GunBroker or wherever but this one was too good to pass up. Good shape, very fair price, no dash version local so easy to get to and no transfer BS.

After I picked it up I went to the home of a friend that has a shop for gun work, mill, lathe, etc. He also has a place to shoot pistols and concrete benches for 100 and 200 yards rifle. It shoots as well as I remember.

Now to find some grips I like.

Nothing wrong with those grips if you bought it to shoot. Just check to make sure there's no rust growing underneath them.

Nice acquisition. The 686 and 586 are tanks; the quintessential melding of form and function. I carried my 4” 686-2 with 145 gr Silvertips in a Hoyt break front for the first 7 years of my LE career. It came new with the wood targets, but they were immediately swapped out for Pachmayr grippers. I thought it was the ultimate duty rig. Unfortunately, I was forced to relegate it to the nightstand duty and carry the issued G21. Sadly I traded it away; I have no recollection for what. On a positive note, I recently picked up it’s cousin, a 4” 586 no dash. Ironically, it came with Pachmayr Grippers and I changed them out for factory combats.

My most cherished firearm is my late father’s 686 no dash he purchased new in Sept. 1981. I have everything it came with. Used it to teach my sons how to shoot a handgun, still goes out now and then for some range time.

I too have a 686 no dash....bought new in 81.....NO...I have not and will not send it in for the "M".....the action is so smooth....tight....perfectly timed...and I will not let some fuddlefingered S&W tech screw it up...

Those grips are too narrow.

I’ve had mine since they were first introduced. I bought it to sooth my pain when the department took my model 67 combat masterpiece and issued me a HK P7M8.

My 686 came with Pachmayr Grippers as well. I like them for carry and shooting, but couldn't resist adding a set of factory Target grips for show.

SteveJewels, Good choice in a .357 IMHO. I'd been carrying a 66 for a few years, but started carrying a 586, then a 686 soon after they were introduced. Over the years, owned several more and, much as I like the K and N frame .357s, the 686s became my favorite .357 revolvers. I think they are one of the best production revolvers S&W has manufactured. I still have a no dash and -5..

Its my understanding this front multi-adjustable site is referred to as a silhouette style . The original box / label has no description . I have a S/W model 29-3 "silhouette " with a 10 5/8" barrel with the same style front site. Both are pictured here They are not aftermarket sites as I have seen and had a couple revolvers in the past with sites like these.
