My brother found at LGS a 586 no dash 6 in barrel with wood S&W Target Rosewood grips. Also there is a 686 no dash 6 inch barrel with rubber grips. He went in to buy a new 686 and later wanted to add the round but larger S&W Target wood grips. Both are priced the same. He was there until closing and called me for advice on witch one to buy. I have directed him to burchase the 586 because it is more of a classic and already comes with the wood grips. A cost of about $60 he would have to spend if he went with the 686. Which one should he buy and why?

It will be used for target and stored well.

Both are same price, Both are what I would say 85% to 90% per pictures and description from brother. Both are no box or paperwork. Brand new price lists the S/S one at a $40 premium. S&W site lists the wood grips at I believe $60. I have directed he towards the 586 because at is a beautiful S&W with great bluing. It has been reintroduced and how long will this model be offered. I have owned a Model Highway Patrolmen five screw side plate that was stolen. I have replaced it with a Model 27-2 that took a while to locate and purchase. I don't think you can beat that classic S&W look.

What is he going to use it for? Hunting, target, sd, etc? How is he with keeping up with care? Stainless usually works better for me on an all purpose gun. I am corrosive to firearms I carry :)

Price & condition would determine which one for me. Grips woud be secondary.

I would give a $75+/- premium for stainless, bit would also have to determine which gun I would feel more confident buying used. I would have to evaluate wear & tear, lock-up, timing, action smoothness....

Personally, I lean towards blued revolvers. And in second hand condition they more readily show the care they have been afforded. All things being equal, I'd help a brother out and get them both.

Both are excellent revolvers, but remember that Smith and Wesson is no longer making the M-586. The price on them has risen in the last year or two.

I bought a 4" M-586 two years ago, on a whim, paid $400.00 for it not knowing if I would like it or not. I just finished shooting it this morning, 100 rounds of full .357 magnum rounds, and I'm still smiling.

Go with the classic and then get get the M-686 later.

From a maintenance point, the 686 is easier to care for. From a classic style and looks, the 586 is my pick. Since he would be using it for target and then kept in the safe,I'd go for the 586, (unless he is adverse to cleaning).

Took the words out of my mouth. I have both and would get a 586 over the 686 which is easier to find.

the mod 586 is now being made again.remember all early mod 586&686 guns were recalled for a firing pin bushing replacement.once done they stamp an m on them above serial no.to show its been modified.some 357 ammo could blow the primer back into the pin and freeze up the gun.i know from first hand experience.they still honor the over 30 year old recall at no cost to you

The 586 would be my choice as well for fun target time at the range. Either one will make you smile though.

586. Harder to find and better than today's ****.

both are fine revolvers ..there is no right answer ,which ever he buys, make sure you get the other one !

586 would be my choice all things being equal. You can always find a 686 later.

I sold a 4" 686 to get a 4" 586, so you know which one I'd pick.

Had two 686's and two 586's so far and IMO the 586's just feel better.

Less common, more desirable.

He purchased the 586 no dash. But he is going to look if they have the 686 no dash still in display case when he gets back to Los Angeles area. This being California I told him it will be sold. Thanks for all the info and help.
