I've read all posts I can find about difficulty sometimes when reassembling the slide on a 6906. Every video I have seen shows it sliding right on first time every time but I have a lot of trouble getting my spring and rod centered so I can pull the slide back to reinsert the pin. If I am not very careful the spring and rod like to slip out and the spring goes flying. I feel like the barrel might be worn where the rod sits but I have nothing to compare. Is this just operator error or am I in need of a trip to a good smith?

If the guide rod doesn't want to stay in the assembly notch on the bottom of the barrel, check to see if the flange on the guide rod still has a sharp edge.

If rounded, sometimes the edge can be "sharpened" with judicious file work.

ALWAYS consider repairing or replacing the guide rod before the barrel.

That's fantastic, I never considered the guide rod could be the issue. I will check into that right away and since I already know barrels are hard to find I expect the rod might be easier to find if necessary.
Thanks for the tip.
