The date discrepancy comes from the fact that I recall our wedding took place on a Saturday, as we, and our wedding ensemble, couldn’t afford to take time off from work. On a week day. My dear, lifelong friend, had been harping at me to get married as he planned to do on 5/20/1951. I was to be his best man. Just to outdo him a bit, I scheduled our wedding for the previous week, 5/27/1951 Our regular pastor was on vacation in Florida, so, the ceremony was performed by an elderly, substitute pastor of our church. He was the pastor that gave my Dad his Catechism instructions, many years previous.
The rent, for our first household was $8.00 per month. Our wages then, were .25- .50 cents per hour.
Someone asked if we were we stubborn? My answer is yes, and we were committed, and took our vows seriously.
Someone suggested that we spoof the folks that predicted that our marriage would last 6momths, and tell them that we’d get a divorce, won’t work as most of them, including the pastor of our church, are all dead now.
Viola got the short end of the stick from the start, her wedding band, including engraving, “Lowell to Viola”, cost me $10.00, and my wedding band including engraving “Viola to Lowell” cost her $20.00. It was at least 10 more years until I could afford to buy her a small diamond engagement ring, that she still wears today.
Neither of us has ever took recreational drugs
We always maintained a large vegetable garden, and small orchard. We fed our family, and friends, winter, and summer from its produce.
Viola and I had a truly wonderful day, celebrating out anniversary with local family, and friends. The old adage ‘It Takes Two to Tango’, falls miserably short, in fact it takes God, a good pardner, and many good friends, such as ours to Tango!
