It looks like there might be a rip snort'in storm brewing here in Central Ohio. If we make it through the storm, and the night, Viola (Hezzy), and I, will celebrate our 70th wedding anniversary, Saturday 5/27/2021.

Our friends and relatives predicted that our marriage would last 6 months. We fooled them; it’s been 840 months.

I thought that our lifestyles in the 1950s, might interest some youngsters, on this forum. Shortly after our marriage, we rented a 2 room, summer kitchen, and a 1 hole outhouse, to set up housekeeping. Nether had indoor plumbing, and all water had to be hand pumped and carried inside from an outside well. Summer kitchens were used to do most of the cooking, in wood fired ranges. It kept the heat out of the main farmhouse. We rented this meager abode, for the extravagant sum of $8.00 per month. That building measured approximately 15 x 20 ft. and had linoleum covered floors. We furnished it with used, appliances, and furniture, a Kitchen table, and 4 chairs, a bottle gas kitchen range, a living room chair, a bedroom chair, a few of Mom’s hand wove rag rugs, curtains, and bed linens, a door mat, and an Ice Box, that held a 25lb., block of ice, that needed replenishing every other day. I hauled that 25lb., block of ice wrapped in newspaper, on the front bumper brace, of our 1936 Ford. We purchased a used Simmons Hide A Bed Sofa, to complete our furnishings, the rest we borrowed, from friends, and family. That 1936 Ford, and the Hide A Bed Sofa, and our clothing, were our only possessions.

Happy 70th. Anniversary!

Chubbo,

Happy anniversary to both you and the Mrs.! Reading through your post I was able to visualize the myriad of real "challenges" that you have both met head on in the past seventy years, and you have surmounted each and every one throughout your entire marriage. Was the Mrs. aware of how married life would be after you exchanged your wedding vows?

A minister recently said to me that over half the marriages today fail. When the going gets tough, they "throw in the towel"!

If we make it (I'm still on probation every day), we'll celebrate our 52nd on January 1st.

Congratulations to both of you, and best wishes for many more years of happiness together!

Cheers!

Bill

Congratulations, You would get a great mention from Paul Harvey. My parents wed in 1934. Dad was from cedarville CA and Mom from London. Just after the depression dad traveled to Gods Lake' Manitoba Canada. Met Mom on the way while in Winnipeg where the mine was doing the hiring. Hard rock mine and Dad worked 8 hrs a day, 6 days a week. Got paid $16 a week, rent on a two bedroom cabin, furnished by the Co, was $9 a month. Had to buy food 6 months worth at a time. Only way to get it there was by a caterpillar train of sleds across the ice.

Wow....70 years!!!

You are both to be congratulated on this most impressive milestone.

From Central Ohio, I wish you and your bride continued good health and happiness.

You're an inspiration to us all!

(42 years here...only 28 more years to go to match Chubbo and Hezzy....LOL)

Congratulations to you and Viola! You’ve been married longer than many of us have been alive!

That is simply awesome! Just for the heck of it you should tell those 6 mo predictors that they were right and you're finally filing for divorce. *s*

That was a very well written and interesting read. I'm sure some of our younger members have trouble visualizing what you so eloquently described. Having never see these things they will have no point of reference.

One thing that helped me to "see" is that my first car was a 1936 Ford. It was 1962 so not a new car but for a 16 year old with a new drivers license it was a limousine.

Thanks for posting this view of your past and I hope you and Viola weather the storm ok. As long as y'all have been married I expect this isn't you first storm...Congratulations on a remarkable life.

Congratulations! People do not know how to commit and do not take their vows seriously. My first marriage ended after four years. She wanted out because the men where she worked were pursuing her. A year later she said that she had made a mistake and wanted to try again. I said no. I then met my present wife, Karen, while working in a hospital. This year will make 38 years.

Congrats - 70 years is a huge milestone. The mention of an out kitchen struck me as well, I hadn't thought about one of those for years. I remember as a kid wondering why my Grandma had a stove on her back porch. My dad explained it to me. This was in the late 60's so she had an inside kitchen and the out kitchen. She canned enough food in that out kitchen to feed a small army.

Congratulations. I feel young - for a minute - only closing on 30 years. 70 is most impressive. Too stubborn to give up?

Like me!

I'm an old bachelor, never got married. If I got married tomorrow, to match what you've done I'd have to live to be 138 years old.

The couple I've known to come the closest to you and your wife are my aunt and uncle who live about 4 blocks from me. Last January they celebrated their 61st anniversary. And my brother and I were at the wedding!

Congratulations! Seventy years is kind of a miracle these days. I can relate to your poor stories. Most people now would not believe what people back then went through to be with the one that they loved. We lacked three months and one day of making it to seventy.

05/27/2021 is today. Not Saturday.

And... Congratulations.

Congratulations to you and the blushing bride.

You made my personal journey into the "our own place" look good.

I do believe sharing hardships builds a real bond.

I also believe that a lot of complainers about today world should spend a month in the world you started in.
