Being on limited duty while recovering from a surgery, I had been sent to our District Headquarters to fill in for the normal Professional District Dispatchers who were attending an annual gathering. While I was ok working as a dispatcher at my local post, I had absolutely no business working by myself in District Headquarters, which was in a totally different county than I normally patrolled. (I was worse than a fish out of water, more like a fish lying in the middle of a 6 lane highway.)
I got the phone call from a road Trooper and he filled me in about the first plane hitting the tower. I got to a TV in the back room just in time to see the second plane hit the second tower.
The dispatch desk didn't have a pager number list or cell phone list for the District Staff or local agencies or even a phone book, because all the normal Professional Dispatchers knew the numbers by memory.
Luckily our operations stayed pretty much normal for the remainder of the shift.
At the end of my shift I got home just in time to have a flight of Military Aircraft (F16's ?) from the local Air Force Base pass over the house at full throttle, setting off sonic booms that were heard for miles around. Apparently they were sent to intercept Air Force One to supplement the normal security flights.
