9mm shield broke

I waited a year and 3months for this gun. I got it this week on wensday and took it to the range on thrusday and after 50 shots the return spring broke in half,guide rod bent and a broke firing pin. now what the hell s@w ? yes I call as soon as I got home yes they are going to fix it,BUT ITS BRAND NEW. THIS **** SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. THIS IS THE SECOND GUN I HAVE SENT BACK IN A YEAR . I WENT OUT YESTERDAY AND BROUGHT A XDS 9MM AND PUT 100 ROUNDS WITH IT TODAY AND IT WAS AWSUM. I am a s@w fan I have aton of them pistols and rifles, but I am choosing to look else where now. the funny thing of it is the customer rep also told me all the problems about the gun before I could get all the problems told to him. gofigure

Sorry you had an issue(s), but no one can guarantee perfection. Not heard of any similar issues for the Shield, but a broken recoil spring is always a possibility. .S&W probably out sources the springs, and the recoil spring was defective and broke, which caused the bent guide rod. I can't understand a broken striker. What ammo were you using?

I know most all Shield owners have had not problems with their guns, but like any mechanical product, parts can be defective, be made out of specs, and fatigue, causing issues.

I, along with many others, went through the mag drop issue with the Shield 40. It is fixed now and no more problems.

I wonder why S&W doesn't sell parts on Brownells website, for the Shield. They could make some extra dough that way. Beretta owners are always buying up extra parts for such issues. Also helps to eleviate guns shipped back S&W for smithing.

It's great for S&W and people that like to do their own repairs.... Like me.

Sorry to hear of your problem with the Shield, I own one as well as three other guys I know and combined we probably have 6000 rds through them with no issues. These are mass produced pistols and S&W has been cranking them out to try to meet the demand so even though it is frustrating they will make it right for you. Glad you like the XDs I have been eyeing those as well not to replace my Shield but be another carry option.
 
9mm shield broke

Can't even get a Shield in Massachusetts where they're made. Plenty in Las Vegas, Louisiana and who knows where else though. You'd think S&W would at least equally support their own state's gun owners who want to support them. A rare broken part would still be welcomed under the current void.

Mike5220...sorry to hear about your Shield....unlucky on the draw on that one...S&W will repair it I'm sure, give them a chance to make it right...it really is a great shooting pistol

I am sure they will fix it. but the point is I have had to send 2 BRANDNEW guns back to have them fix them. I waited for over a year for the shield.i was like a kid on Christmas day but when it broke FIRST TIME out with it. It seriously pissed me off

I bought a new truck three days ago. went out to go to work today... and it would not start, turned over fine, but did not fire up. Dealer sent a tow, and did a diagnostic on it and the ECM was dead. You spent 400 dollars on a pistol, I spent 40,000 on a truck. How do you feel now?
 
Did you clean it first ???

Properly lubricate it?

If you have this much grief over a $350 plastic gun breaking, wow.

S&W makes good guns too. But they also have to compete with mass produced cheap stuff. You bought a cheap gun. It's not a PC gun.

I'm happy every time my Shield doesn't break! If it does, I just send it back and grab another.

I feel your pain.
To wait that long and have it fail so badly.
We want to trust they will be ready if we ever need them.
Kinda shakes your confidence in them.

I do have a 9mm Shield and so far no issues.

Aren't these things supposed to be for self defense? They sure aren't bullseye target pistols.

The most important thing is that they MUST work! Every time! RELIABILITY is everything.

I won't have a pistol that I have ANY reason to think won't work.

A lot of money to spend for a light weight blunt instrument!

Rocks are cheaper, plentiful, and more reliable!
 
I know it sucks when someone has an issue with their gun but when I read someone that calls it a "clip" when everyone knows the it's call a magazine, makes me wonder if something else is in play here. Have had my Shield for over a year now with about 500 rounds through it and no issues other than my sweat issues that I talked about on another post. S&W will take care of you and that's why we all own S&W, piece of mind.
 
Years ago (around 1985) I did a paper for my employer on the cost of quality (or the lack there of).

It was interesting in that poor quality cost more than the work fixing the things. It cost in lost customer satisfaction and even lost customers all together. We looked at American vs. Japanese goods as well as our own domestic competitors. That led to a major quality task force at the company. Our quality went through the roof and our customers were grateful for that. Many got rid of their lower cost imports and went back to the domestic product.

Every day on these forums we read about many people sending their guns back to S&W. That means they need an entire staff to handle that work. What about all the returns from people not on the forums too? They are getting a lot of returns. Everything from many broken parts to double stamping to mismatched components to who-knows-what.

Quality control only works if it controls quality. Based on some the product leaving the doors of S&W, their quality control is in need of a quality improvement. While I found my new FS M&P 9mm to be flawless and operating perfectly with the ammo I use, it is apparent that isn't the case 100% of the time.

S&W needs to revisit the cost of quality or the lack there of. The cost is always measured in more than dollars lost.
 
That's a significant issue with a new gun and it seems you haven't had the best luck with S&W pistols. Sorry to hear that.

The Shield we just finished testing fired over 15,000 rounds. I know I want one!
 
I feel left out!

Between me and mine we have three (3) FS 9's, (1) FS .45, (2) 9mm Shields and (1) .40 Shield...

ZERO problems!

Can't help but wonder, when folks post these tales of catastrophic failure online if we're getting the whole story...

What kind of off-brand gun show reloads were you using at the time of this failure?
 
I have a Shield 9mm with over 3000 rounds down the pipe no issues! 15-22 with over 15000 rounds no issues and a full size with over 400 rounds no issues. **** happens bud! Yeah it sucks, but its life. My two year old air handler fan motor went out and had to replace it I paid $4800 for the system and a $200 motor broke, it happens! You need to pull your panties up and get over it. If S&W wasn't making it right then wine like a little girl. I'd love to see some pics of this S&W clip, the broken pieces and the new xds 9mm!
 
I have over 2000 rounds through my Shield with no problems.

I ran 1500 rounds through my M&P Pro Saturday(used it as the stage gun at an Expo Stage for 3 Gun Nation), that takes it up to around 6000 failure free rounds.

Let's see a pic of the broken parts next to the XDS...

clip or mags . the same in my book. I have been competition shoot for over 30 years. I know my way around guns . no reloads it was all factory ammo.yes the gun was cleaned and properly lubraciated. sorry for yr 40000 truck not starting but that's to much for a dam truck that will rust out and lost more then half its value wen you drive it off the showroom floor. sorry that a lot of people think that a shield is a cheap gun my wife had a bodyguard that broke the first 6 months. I have several s@w handguns and ars. s@w does make good guns but the man who did a paper on quality control nailed it on the head. I loved that post
 
I have a 4 week old shield. I ran 3 mags through it and the button on the end of the guide rod assembly, the part you see from the muzzle end, worked its way out 1/4". I pushed it back in and noticed 14 rounds later the "button" was missing. I found out when I was cleaning it later that the "button" is what holds the rod/spring assembly together. That little ol spring has a lot of force!! 2 weeks later and I haven't received my repair part yet from s&w

Maybe they own both guns. I'm here with a M&P40c, but I'm also on HK Pro with a P9S, & on Beretta with 2 9000s. I don't keep all my eggs in one basket. GARY
 
I also feel your pain. I bought a new Shield 9mm and the yellow sear disconnect lever fell out of the pistol. It was missing the pin that holds the lever in. Sent it back to S&W for repair and just waiting to get it back.
 
It is obvious to me, especially after the S&W safety warning about the trigger safety, that there is no final inspection of the pistol. After assembly they fire it once or twice but there is no quality control review of the final assembly. That is why you see odd problems with S&W guns.

By contrast, German made guns go to an independent proof house in Germany where each gun is inspected for quality control and then fired and tested for accuracy.

Someone either trolling or another "gun expert" that will even tell you, "I'm sccchhhmmmmaaaaatttt!!!" in their best Fredo voice.

Funny how I know several people with Shields and other model M&Ps and not one person has ever even had 1 issue with them... Yet this clown claims he bought 2 lemons, I'm not buying it.
