I bought this 1905 4th change 38 special in nickel a while back and made a thread about it called beautiful to me. I received my SCSW book today and upon looking up my gun I see that the serial number 6418xx is a 4th change which I had already confirmed with Mr. Jinks. As i'm reading about the history of them it says square butt 4th changes are more rare which I think mine is a square butt (posted picture to confirm) and it says that target models had serrated triggers (picture to confirm). My gun does not have adjustable rear target sights and has a half moon on the front. Is this a special gun to have that type trigger? Whats the value if it is a rare version (with my luck its not) and also should the right side say .38 Special CTG or .38 S&W Special CTG? The book says the first one. The whole gun is numbers matching so I do not think the trigger has been swapped

The relevant section in the SCSW should have read that round butts are more scarce, not square butts. There is a list somewhere on the internet with corrections to the 3d SCSW but I'm not sure where it is.
Not sure about the trigger, I don't have one close at hand to look at.

oh okay ill make that correction

Square butts are far more common, and the trigger could have been changed easily - it's not serial numbered. I don't think there is anything rare about yours.

I'm certainly no expert, but recently I looked at several 1905 4 change service models produced in the 1930s and they all had serrated triggers.

It sounds like an unusual sight configuration. I would like to see some pictures of the whole gun including the sights. Thanks!

All K and N frame triggers became grooved after March, 1929.
Front sight is typical.
Cal marking is typical.
There is no unusual feature on your gun- plain vanilla with nickel. :D
