A Couple New S&W's, but what should I offer for the M39?

Hi all!

It was a S&W day for me today as I picked up my S&W 915 from CA gun jail (a trade for my Ruger LC9) and a buddy from work gave me his Model 39-2 to see if I'd like to buy it. I did a little research on various auction web sites, but prices varied widely. This pistol (pictured below along with a quick 915 pic) has carry wear around most of the edges and some superficial scratches. No big dings. The grips show discoloration, I'm guessing from several years of carry (my friend has been on the department for 33 years). I shot maybe 150 rounds today and got one failure to feed and a couple failure to extracts though it was dead-on accurate. This will mostly be a fun gun, but I'd like to make it reliable if possible, so I'm wondering if parts (extractors, springs, etc.) are available. The serial number is A203XXX. My friend basically told me to name the price, so what would be fair to offer given the condition etc.?

Thanks for the help!

Wow, name the price? A fair price would be right around three hundred, give or take fifty bucks (not sure of the market where you are).....parts are available too, especially springs, sounds like you probably need some....

Does the 39-2 come with anything extra, box, tools, mags, etc? If just for the gun itself... 400 give or take a couple bucks?

Like griff said, it totally depends on where you live. In MA you would probably be looking at 400. I'd offer 350, if he says no, go up to 400. I don't think you'll be disappointed either way.

I just picked up a 39-2 last May with box, papers and extra mag for $439. About 98%. Have not shot it yet. Don't know if I will.

I recently picked up a 39-2, no box, beater (CAI Import) with 1 mag for $250.

I would offer $300 and tell the guy about the issues when you shot it. Tell him it needs all new springs or the offer would be more.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I ended up offering $400 and he accepted. While a little higher than normal, here in CA prices are generally high and I'd probably be looking at more $ in FFL fees, etc. to have one shipped, and it would most certainly be more in the local market. I bet he would have taken $350, but he would have regretted it.

Thanks again!

More than fair on your part, sounds like the right price in your market, and you won't regret it, although he still might down the road, most of us do.......

You AND your buddy can both be happy! Congrats!

Around here, in any sort of decent shape, they go for $450-500. Beaters with 1 mag may go for $350-400. At least around here, they rarely show up with box and tools
