A different problem in self-defense

This happened in Louisville, KY late last March with a total estimate of 200 people. People were beaten, property stolen and other property vandalized. AFAIK, no one was convicted of any crimes.

While I'm not going to pretend Chicago doesn't have its share of bad areas, this is another unprovoked attack, this time with a machete striking one person in the head and neck.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/...n-cta-brown-line-platform-20140909-story.html

Again, a group attacking two innocent people. Not all of Chicago is bad so there's no reason to suspect that just because you're in the city you should expect war. Things can and do happen anywhere.

I'm not an old man by any means. I'm young, I'm fit, and I walk with confidence. That doesn't mean I'm any less of a target than anyone else.

The group-think mentality displayed in both situations is classic and text book. Individually, the offenders are cowardly. They find strength in the number of their group, where they gain confidence and become emboldened. If you fire to defend your life, odds are strongly in your favor that the group will disperse in an attempt for self-preservation. Again, they are cowards and this behavior is proof of just that. If you must fire, fire upon those commiting the direct act of violence. If video surfaces of you firing indiscriminately, it will hurt you. Provided the group is attacking in that moment as a whole, punch as many holes in as many bad guys as you can.

Even one shot per offender will issue a psychological stop if it doesn't incapacitate them. I carry my shield with 9 rounds. I carry a back-up mag. That is certain to end a group battle like this. I would bet money on it.

It's going to keep happening until someone shoots 6 or 8 of them.

That won't help...The likelihood of bad kids [or adults] being aware of the news enough to see that a group was stopped is just about nil.

And if the armed response is in Atlanta - or Phoenix or Wichita or Butte, nobody in Memphis will have a clue it happened...Not because the media didn't report it...because the folks who do that don't pay that much attention.

First: Note that both the victims AND offenders were a mixed race group. Thug culture is not about race. It is about behavior.

Boys its really a shame we can't call it what it really is.
Well, from both my inbred outlook and my limited experience, including in Memphis, Doug M. IS calling it what it is. In the mid-seventies (post-MLK), I was TAD to NAS Memphis, without car or weapons. One time, when hitchhiking to the local off-base watering spot, I was picked up by a carful of young adult males who were probably headed to pretty much the same kind of place, and weren't the same race as I. They asked where I was headed. I told them, and they were familiar with it (it was a small place that catered to both significant races, which seemed to occupy different parts of the premises). They dropped me off there. That was it. No attitudes, plus they were nice enough to stop for me in the first place.

It just isn't all about race. Of course, for some folks it is, but, when possible, I try to let that remain their problem, not mine.

That was hard to watch. I cannot imagine how cold and detached someone has to be, to film that and not help while that poor kid is getting his head stomped upon.

The videographer was an off-duty Kroger employee. She thought it was funny right up until the "white boy" ended up at the store entrance and two of her co-workers were getting beaten. Then, it was, "Call somebody!" Her description of the attackers as "'hood rats" was right on point.

Funny huh?THATS funny. In a sick sense. Unfortunately, its a symptom of the rot that's been allowed to fester.
Only tough love is gonna fix it, and I haven't seen much of that in the last couple of decades. About when this stuff started showing up.
Do the math.

The Shield and a reload is better than many people thing is adequate, and I am glad to see this. BUT: while I suspect that you are right in the general sense, if things go to hell in a handcart around you, it will not be money you will be betting.

This is true. After much consideration, the shield is a great balance between comfortable carry and capacity. I'd love to carry my CZ P07, but there's no way to conceal that unless I give up on life and dress around it. In this day and age, while revolvers have their place, it's hard to understand how anyone can feel comfortable with only 6 rounds on hand. One offender? Sure. Multiple offenders? Good luck.

Interesting thread! I'd like to hit on a few points and see what you folks think.
First as law biding citizens we comport ourselves with a certain mentality, we tend to be creatures of habit and try not to go in harms way. That said sometimes trouble finds you and despite your best efforts to avoid it, downplay it, insert "verbal judo", and try to deescalte the situation, these thugs only see a bleeding sheep they want to harm!
I've watched the videos on FB and paid very close attention to the Ferguson, Mo. Riots and can tell you I was armed during said events even though Ferguson is a bit from E. St. Louis.
Thing is to have a plan, keep aware of your surroundings at all times ESPECIALLY if your abroad of in a new local, have communications available at all times, and if necessary ATTACK!

Yeah I know it's supposed to be defend, but if you see trouble coming, exhausted all your options, called in the calvary and yet the miscreants are still intent on harming you or those your with, its time to engage them viciously and violently! DON'T get hung up on "What If" or "am I legal to do this" crud that will get you killed! Instead ACT! Let the police and lawyers deal with the aftermath. Remember your assailants aren't worried about the law, they only want your stuff or worse to make you bleed!

To them its a game, and you should chagr the rules on them! Warnig shots will get you tossed in jail for firing an uncontrolled shot! Use your ammo on the threat(s)! Tag the actors not the runners, and get to a safe place and tell shoe ers on the phone to communicate that your moving to safer ground.

Lastly as much as I admire the G19, my idea for a modern day snubnose .38 is the G26. It can take whatever Glock mag you care to utilize as a reload as long as its 9mm, same for the. 6906 and M&Pc.

A group of violent thugs assaulting three outnumbered victims certainly sounds like a prototype self-defense scenario which would afford a victim the right to defend himself with a handgun. It would be interesting to see how aggressive the predatory pack would have been had the leading alpha male been planted with a 10-ring shot.

This is well thought out and makes a great deal of sense. Unfortunately, it ALL depends on Who you are, WHO the culprits are, and WHERE you are located as to how your defense of your life is viewed. It shouldn't even be a consideration but we ALL know how that goes these day's.

I just stay away from Memphis, Atlanta, St. Louis, and Detroit.

Nearer home, I only go to Oakland rarely and during day time.

These places can do without my tourist money or business until they get their act cleaned up.

Don't forget Chicago, and the District of Columbia, two other places in which, at least in certain parts thereof, you are probably safer in Jerusalem, or maybe even Baghdad.

Speaking of Baghdad, I note that Chicago, as well as New York, have their own anti-gun versions of "Baghdad Bob" (someone who alleges as true what can be clearly seen to be false): the profane Chicago mayor, Rahm Emanuel, former NY Mayor, the bilious anti-gun, Bloomberg, and the tyrannical NY Governor Cuomo, who has never seen a gun or a Christian he likes). These people assert with a straight face facts about gun control that not only anyone with common sense can see amount to lunacy, but that prove conclusively that these officials have gone "completely and utterly 'round the bend."

Please include Chicago on your list.

I just want to go about my business without inference, I don't care what color a person is, if you try to harm me or my family, the fight for my life is on.
Hopefully I prevail, if I don't, at least I didn't go out on my knees.

Train to live another day.

Don't go there. He got suspended. Look back at my initial post, and my excerpt from it - it's about thug culture, which crosses all racial and other lines.

I frequent Memphis often, and this is not in a terribly bad area of town. What bothered me the most about the whole ordeal, is how no one inside the store tried to help. There was two people in the parking lot who supposedly tried to help, but I don't know if they were targeted for helping, or just for being in the wrong spot at wrong time.

These thugs are gutless, spineless scum. They prey on the weak. If enough men in that store had stepped up and met force with force, I imagine the rats would have scurried back to their holes.

If it was my child being beaten that severe, I would hope someone would step in & help him..

I do believe this is what it's going to take, shoot a few and the rest will run.
These gangs turn to big chickens when the heat gets put on them.

I wish more people would carry and defend themselves.
You might get injured or killed, but you will send a message.
