Serial number 47097. I bought the parts kit and the parts I got were in almost new condition. Almost no turn ring, great case colors, great bore and chambers. Internal parts are in great shape too. Serial number on inside of grips is totally legible.

An almost new condition 107 year old gun got destroyed. Makes me sad.

Yes a darn shame. But you have some beautiful parts there. We can only imagine what has been destroyed.
When I used to do vacation relief for the evidence Officer I used to admire the guns the State guy had in his car when he would stop by to pick up weapons headed for destruction.

Yep, another gun "Off The Streets"! Hooray for gun grabbers!

I heard a story a couple days ago that congress has learned of this (I can't remember the new phrase they're using for the un-destroyed parts) "problem". Someone has introduced a bill to require ALL these parts be destroyed.

I feel safer already.

But- but- but----
Haven't you thought about how much safer the world is?
Think about the children!

^^^ Well said ^^^
These children need one thing that they are not getting......
Parental supervision and oversight.... not a restriction on old gun parts.
(This comment comes the day after my sleepy little town reinstated a curfew. A group of 13 & 14 year olds have been out in the wee hours destroying things around town.)

Well, there's the infamous "Gun Sculpture" in Canada. :(
Lots of spare parts and frames in there.

Five tons of guns, made inert, then welded together into "art".

Canada, Australia, Great Britain, and at least a half dozen other countries have dragged in from private hands guns and made sculptors of them. When the Chinese, Russians, North Koreans or ???? come knocking on their door, who are they going to be screaming to for guns to repel the hordes, just like England did in WWII.

I think we should tell them to GTH. Guns in the hands of the citizens would have made Putin think twice, and it surely would have slowed down Hamas if not stopped them in Israel.

I'm in a major Blue city and I've seen little old ladies bring in collectible guns like this whenever a gun "Buy Back" program takes place. You seldom see any "bad guy" guns, mainly Vet bring backs that some widow didn't know what to do with until municipalities advertise a "buy back".

Long before gun buy backs, the San Diego Police used to take confiscated guns out to the trench off the shore of the Pacific Ocean and dump them into the water from a boat. The San Diego Union had a front page picture of an officer holding a Henry Rifle about to throw it in. Holy Moly. Oh the Humanity. Rifle was probably used in a bank holdup. Big Larry

Real nice M1917 S&W

Arrived today. Pics elsewhere on this forum. Nicest S&W M1917 I have ever seen. # 6929, flat stock circles, and concentric grooved hammer. A good 99%, and probably unfired. I don't normally collect US martial arms any longer, but I could not turn this one down. Big Larry

So why was the gun destroyed and who did it?

I have no idea why. From the very good condition of the parts, I assume it was turned in at a buy-back by someone who inherited it and didn't like firearms. It was acquired from one of the companies that salvages the parts and sells them on the internet.

Not to worry, just like in the days of Prohibition people will just make and sell guns anyway.
These gun parts will go a long way into putting together a new revolver on a home made frame.

Years ago I bought some Smith & Wesson Parts of eBay. After a while I get a knock on my door. Why it's my friendly neighborhood ATF Agent. We talked at the door. Didn't invite him in. Figured he was here to see my suppressor and class 3 paperwork. He told me no. He was here to talk about the S&W Parts I bought off eBay and he had a screen shot of the part and my purchase. Sorry I told him, that was a "Part" not a firearm and perfectly legal to buy. I asked him if I would be compensated for the Part. He said he would give me a receipt for the Part. I told him, sorry can't help you I used the part as barter at a gun show and don't have it. He finally broke and told me the parts had been stolen by a security guard and were being sold off. I told him better watch your own then huh? Now go pound sand. True story.Thousands of guns, gun parts stolen from ATF / Northern District of West Virginia | Former contract security guard at ATF facility sentenced to 14 years for stealing and selling firearms | United States Department of Justice

I bought my first M57 from an older gentleman in Idaho. I did all the FFL paperwork as required. In Michigan all handguns need to be registered with the local police department. As a law abiding citizen and a CCW holder I complied. It was several weeks later and I got a call from the sheriff department. I had purchased quite a few Smith's in recent weeks and thought that was the reason for the call. Nope the M57 was reported stolen in Washington state back in 1986!! I had to surrender the gun (In mint condition I might add) and was out the purchase price. I contacted the police department in Washington where it was returned to and talked to a understanding detective but nothing could be done. He said in all likelihood it would be destroyed.

So you were out the gun and the money you paid for it, the rightful owner was out his gun and that is some how legally justifiable.

It would appear so. You would think there would be some sort of statue of lim itations as it was stolen 35 years ago at the time. What's the chance the original owner would even be still living?? He did have good taste however.
