Steve wanted me to share with you some of the fun he has had with his second most favored carry gun. A model 66-2 2 1/2” barrel. He knows that generally giving full serial number information out is taboo but this is one that has to be shared. The serial number is 252K001.
Often he likes to carry this 66 at the gun shows, unloaded of course and cable secured as if it were for sale. When someone asks him what he wants for the Smith the fun begins. He will hand it to them butt up, tells them to look at the serial number and then make him an offer. Now Steve understands serial numbering, he will then go into a spiel, which the unsuspecting person invariably swallows hook, line and sinker. He will tell them this is a Smith and Wesson model 66-2 with a 2 ½” barrel. So if you look at the serial number you will see that the first two digits 25 represent the barrel length, the next digit 2 represents the dash 2 series, the next digit K represents K frame which we all know model 66’s are built on a K frame. And of course the last 3 digits 001 is obvious, this is the first one made. Now Steve knows that this serial number sequence is nothing more than pure coincidence but he has so much fun with the unsuspecting that he can hardly keep from laughing. The most common reaction is just the person looking at the gun is awestruck and they just hand it back. He has had an occasional real low-ball offer and has actually had a few very excessively high offers, which he would not accept or even take advantage of any one. It’s just fun to have fun sometimes. Now he supposes maybe somewhere there is a numbers freak that may get a real kick out of having something like this and just maybe one day this model 66 will show up in the classifieds or on Gunbroker where fools sometimes part with more money than they should.
