Steve wanted me to share with you some of the fun he has had with his second most favored carry gun. A model 66-2 2 1/2” barrel. He knows that generally giving full serial number information out is taboo but this is one that has to be shared. The serial number is 252K001.

Often he likes to carry this 66 at the gun shows, unloaded of course and cable secured as if it were for sale. When someone asks him what he wants for the Smith the fun begins. He will hand it to them butt up, tells them to look at the serial number and then make him an offer. Now Steve understands serial numbering, he will then go into a spiel, which the unsuspecting person invariably swallows hook, line and sinker. He will tell them this is a Smith and Wesson model 66-2 with a 2 ½” barrel. So if you look at the serial number you will see that the first two digits 25 represent the barrel length, the next digit 2 represents the dash 2 series, the next digit K represents K frame which we all know model 66’s are built on a K frame. And of course the last 3 digits 001 is obvious, this is the first one made. Now Steve knows that this serial number sequence is nothing more than pure coincidence but he has so much fun with the unsuspecting that he can hardly keep from laughing. The most common reaction is just the person looking at the gun is awestruck and they just hand it back. He has had an occasional real low-ball offer and has actually had a few very excessively high offers, which he would not accept or even take advantage of any one. It’s just fun to have fun sometimes. Now he supposes maybe somewhere there is a numbers freak that may get a real kick out of having something like this and just maybe one day this model 66 will show up in the classifieds or on Gunbroker where fools sometimes part with more money than they should.

I love it. Thanks for the grin.

I once owned a Model 36 that had the serial number "12345". Foolishly I let it go to someone that valued it more than I did. .... Big Cholla

Steve, sounds like you had a great deal of fun with that gun! You probably got more pleasure from showing the gun and telling the tale than from shooting it. God bless, John

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see the humor in deceiving someone with less knowledge than you, even if you let them in on it. It seems to me that your potential customers will either think you are a liar, full of it, or most likely both. None of that is what I would want a potential customer to think about me, and I can see you losing some sales because of it. However, that is just my opinion.

Nope. It's my opinion, too. The blather that gun show (and other) dealers spout is already revolting, and often, intentionally deceptive. Pawn shop dealers may be even worse.

When I hear a line like this one, I wonder if the dealer has been taken in by someone, or is trying to do that to me. The latter seems more likely, in most cases.

In any event, it causes me to move on to another table.

Years ago I foolishly let go of a Model 19 with the serial number K 1911. At that time I told my friends I had a 1911 S&W in .357. Nobody believed it. Many a happy time with that revolver and my friends, after I showed them.
I agree that most of the talk you hear at gun shows and the like bears a strong resemblance to barnyard manure. However, if it is done with a light heart, I don't see a problem.

Not sure, but I don't believe this guy is a dealer. I understand he is a person who goes to the gun show and has some fun with his unusual serial #'d revolver. I don't see where he is doing wrong. I go to shows all the time and see lots of sourpuss folks. Nice to see someone trying to be happy. Guess that's just me tho! :)

You shouldn't have done that now! Someone may have thought you really had a 1911 made by S+W chambered for 357.
I had a Walther P-5 once with the serial# 007. It belonged to James.....never mind..... :D

Pulling peoples leg is a time honored tradition and it takes true skill to do it correctly.

It certainly sounds to me that Steve is a master. I salute his ability and would love to see him in action.

Sorta reminds me of the time when we would send the new guy in our respiratory department for a sterile fallopian tube. We had the folks in Sterile Supply in on the gag and they were willing conspirators.

i currently own the jerry miculek 45 revolver from the performance center...ser# is jmm0123
thought that was pretty cool

Same here. I'm very impressed that he does so solely for a good natured laugh and not to take advantage of a buyer. That's getting rare these days. Wish I could try that:D

Interesting Serial Number

I own a Smith & Wesson Model 66 with a four inch barrel.

The serial number is: 4K66.

Interesting, don't you think?

My 1894 Marlin has the serial number a series of 0's then 4440. It's in 45 Colt though not 44 WCF. To have a rifle with a serial number that matches the caliber would have been cool.

In basic training my M16A2 had the serial number 000110. It was one of the original XM models that had been over stamped with each revision.

We truly apologize for offending you. Steve thought that those reading this post would comprehend that he is a just a good old country rube walking the aisle at the gun show and is neither the big city sophisticated type or a “dealer”. In light of all of our recent Doom & Gloom postings he thought it would be nice to post something of a light-hearted nature for a change. Looks like he was wrong. Again we apologize to you and any others that were offended by our political incorrectness. We will be much more restrained in any future postings.

Moderators if you feel this posting is bad taste please remove it. The last thing we want to do is stir up controversy.
