A New BBQ Gun - A New Caliber

I only have one, dating from about 1948. I'd like to have one of the newer ones that headspace off of the case mouth but they aren't on the "approved roster" here in California so the only way to get one is through a private party sale at about 3X the current retail price. But mine shoots OK and I don't want to spend the money for a custom fit Bar-Sto or Kart barrel.

Thanks for the input everyone! Nice guns mentioned here, and I love hearing the history of the caliber as well as the older Colt 1911 autos.

As far as holsters go, I guess I'm pretty basic but do like some quality leather. Here in Georgia a Milt Sparks Summer Special will do just fine! Now, to get it out to the range this week :) I bought some blue Mec Gar 9 rounders that appear to be good to go (slide locks back etc). Are there any 10 round with base plate mags out there that are reliable?

That's a beautiful Gold Cup. Mine is a late model Gold Cup Trophy in 9mm.
My .38 Super is a Wilson CQB...

A Few summers back I wrung out some 1911's with a Ransom rest. The 38S gets hot-rodded to make major power factor of 170. I wanted to do that .... break 1340fps with a 125HP ...without exceeding published maximums and with the best accuracy I could achieve. So I tested 19 powders and found 2 powders that would do what I wanted. Here's the best...

Mind you that's 10 shots in < 3" , with a magazine change included, in excess of 1350fps. I didn't even touch on a myriad of loads that might exceed that accuracy with a bit less velocity.

To mind, if I'm not streching the 38S I'm just shooting another 9mm. And I imagine that's what lots of folks do. Sort of akin to; if I'm not hunting with a .44magnum, I'm likely to be plinking with it as though it were another .44 special. Nothing wrong with that.

That is a nice one! I've had several Supers, and been shooting and loading for the Supers since the '70s. Such a wide range of bullet weights, types, load levels, etc. are possible with the Super, I think good adjustable sights as on your GC are a good idea on these guns.

I bought a new Colt O2991 .38 Super (not a GCNM) about a dozen years ago and it is one nice pistol. Ammo is harder to find though.

The Colt 38 super I inherited from Dad is what got me into reloading nearly 30 years ago. It's a 1911 from 1943, but I was told it was a newer slide with a match grade barrel, refinished in a nickle frame and blued slide.

Shoots like a dream, I need to get it out to the range again now that yall got my 38 super juices flowing again. I think I'll probably pick up a new recoil spring for it first though.

Sorry, don't have any pictures of it on my new phone here. I really like the cartridge and the 1911 platform of course. Always wanted to find one in commander size. Maybe I start looking around again.....

PS: photo added wearing Buffalo horn grips

I do have a Colt 1911 in 38 Super but due to the fact I haven't gotten Dies to reload for it yet, I shoot it only on occasion. Factory ammo is sometimes difficult to find and rather expensive when I do. One of these days..........

That said, the gun itself it great! I believe I've got 2 magazines for it. As a self defense round it is also a serious caliber.

I've tried to rid myself of the cartridge in the past… unloaded my witness at a gun show, but a Springfield Custom took its place before I could leave. One day I'll find it a Colt NM to keep it company.

Between 9, 10, 38, 40 and 45, the 1911 magazine box is getting a little crowded. Ziplock bags help. 9x23 is next.

In my pile of 1911s there are 4 .38 Supers. Three Colts: A Government Model, a Combat Commander and a Lightweight Commander. Then there's a RIA 1911A1 that I got a great deal on. :D
I'd love to have a Cold Cup like the OP's. Bubba, ya done good! :D

1952 Colt Commander .38 Super. ;)
