A Pair of Factory Engraved 3.5" 27-2s by Freyburger and Smith

There are things in life that I can't comprehend.

Despite being a lab photographer, watching a print come out of a developing bath was magic for me every time.

I really cannot grasp how airplanes fly, but I'm glad they do.

And, I fully appreciate but cannot understand the great art involved in engraving such guns. How can one person take a beautiful blank slate like these examples and enhance them to this extent? Talent, vision, skill.

Priceless.

The opportunity of ownership, preservation and sharing is a welcome burden, I'm sure. Thanks for sharing.

Can't help with a Tommy Freyburger but here is a 29-2 by Russ Smith; the only one I have by him. A couple of unusual points, at least unusual as far as I know, are the rear sight (don't think I've ever seen one like that), the front sight gold fill, and the placement of the S&W logo. This one, according to Dr. Jinks' letter, was engraved for a long term S&W employee. Wish I had RKmesa's flair with a camera. . . . .

Richard,
Thanks for the opportunity to view what I consider some of the most tasteful engraving one might see. Master engravers are in a class all their own and these two examples illustrate why Freyburger and Smith are considered "Masters". The guns are art.

This dog may not qualify since Tommy did it after leaving S&W.

A very early 629 that came out of Montana...

Tommy called this his "sculpted scroll". After he cut it, he tapped all the edges of the cuts, making them very smooth to the touch. You can rub a cloth over the cuts and it just slides along without snagging or catching at all----

I want just one..............
just one.....
amazing

i need just 6 numbers.

...was wondering of all the engraved guns you have, have any of them been fired before you got them, {not counting factory fired} or do you only buy unfired only...................................M*

A lot of the factory engraved guns that I own have been fired. None of them very much. It is my experience that it is rare that you find an engraved gun that has been fired a bunch. I typically do not fire the engraved ones, as they are harder to clean and I have "plain", well-used guns of the same model that I shoot regularly.

Another of Tommy's finest.

If you will notice in the fifth picture the extra effort Tommy went through to accommodate the potential use of Target Stocks.

A very novel approach to allow Magnas or Targets.

Cool.

enjoy,

I'm a scroll guy. I like Oscar's scrolls- I really like em.

Tommy is a great scroll guy. I like his stuff. If you don't like these, you're definitely not a scroll guy. :D

Interesting. I don't think I've ever seen a cylinder treatment quite like this before-
