Accidental hoarding

Not whining, just stating facts. I have just seen way too many posters on many forums proud their massive collections of 22 ammo. I thank all who have sent ideas and links, but unfortunately it has just added to the frustration, having each and every link out of stock by the time I got there.

Our club is a CMP club and when we ordered, we were promised that the ammo would be delivered in 6 months - didn't happen and that's water over the bridge now. The ammo issue is also over for this shoot, but we have to start dealing with next year right now and that stinks.

Glowe, I understand your frustration, and I'm sure it doesn't help that your events are quickly approaching and you were not able to find ammo. But now you understand where the market is, and you can make sure that you don't get caught again.

I wouldn't cancel any CMP orders, but I wouldn't count on them either. If they ever come in, just count that as surplus ammo.

Keep watching the ammo availability thread. The vendor sells out fast, so you may want to subscribe to the thread so that you get a notification when there is something added.

Try Gunbot.net. It watches many online vendors and updates as they get more stock. The good deals here will sell out fast as well.

If you are in an area like me, you might have 10 Walmarts within 10 miles. The Walmart App, findmeammo.com, and brassbadger.com can help watch their stock. The key here is watching your stores for a few days to determine what are false readings from the inventory systems, and go talk to your store and find out when they put ammo on the shelf. At the stores in my area, they stock ammo around 7:30 AM, so I check these tools before I go to bed, and if they show ammo I am interested in as available, I make sure I get to that store early in the AM.

If you have questions about the tools, ask away.

Cyphertext - I read your post but sounds like you are unable to grasp my point. Let me be clear. I don't give a hoot if I never buy another round of .22 for myself, but it's my wish that kids and new shooters should have an easier time getting what they need to learn how to shoot.

Wouldn't you agree it would be a better state of affairs if folks DIDN'T have to search the internet for .22 but could count on being able to find some at the LGS?

To illustrate, I was working with some youngsters in the local 4-H shooting club yesterday and thinking how different it is nowadays compared to when I was coming up. We never had to worry back then about picking up some .22 when Dad took us shooting. It was always on the shelf at just about any hardware store not to mention the local gun shop.

But now these youngsters or their Dads have to surf the net to locate some .22 and you think that is okay? Give me a break!

I'll just say it one last time and quit my rant.

IF everyone would stop this insane hoarding, supply would return to normal. It's as simple as that.

I encourage everyone to stop buying ammo they don't need. Behave like a rational consumer and we'll all be better off.

Oh my. Someone having to search the internet for 22lr. Oh the horror of the situation.

Well... I have always bought more ammo than I suppose some might define as a "need".

Thing is... I always end up shooting everything I buy no matter how many years it takes. Over past decades, there have not been many times I have thought back and wished I had not bought the ammo. I usually look at the price sticker and kick myself for not buying more of it at the time. Heck, I've still got a few boxes of 45ACP that I paid $8.99/50. I can barely reload for that today.

Being a hoarder (If that's what we're calling it) has allowed me to wait-out severe shortages/panics and move back in as prices relax to what I think is about as low as I can find while still shooting at the volumes I choose. Buying in large quantities, like cases of .22s, yields the lowest price and the floor joist in my home have so far held under the strain. Once again, I sure wish I would have bought even more cases of CCI SV from SGAmmo at $250 a couple years ago. Now it's $40-$50 a brick and not so easy to find.

I'm not sure why anyone thinks this is some type of moral shortcoming or irrational behavior that I should seek therapy for. It's always worked well for me. I'm happy to have the ammo on hand to continue to enjoy shooting unabated. In contrast, it seems to me that those who don't buy more than they need have become distressed. Why do they want me to become distressed like them? Would it not be better for them to emulate happy hoarders? ;)

This has to be one of the most negative threads I have read on the Smith & Wesson Forum. I am surprised it is being continued with all of the personal attacks.

How many shortages have we experienced the past 20 years? With all of these shortages why are people still not prepared when these events occur. Why are people surprised and not prepared? Why the complaining? Granted if one just entered the hobby I can understand but if you have been it it for any length of time there is no reason not to be prepared for when these shortages occur and if you get caught short like I did in January 2013 you just buckle down and fix the problem not blame others because you cannot find ammo.

CCI Standard Velocity $39.99 brick

Buy something else and get total to $50 or $100
Coupon codes
$10 off offer4you
$20 off off20wel14

I just used both these codes in the last couple weeks. If they have expired just google "Midway coupons" and see what else is out there.

I just checked and the off20wel14 works for $20 off $100 order. Bricks are still in stock.

All is well. We're going to help these folks find some rimfire ammo one way or another.

EDIT See above posting
Midway also has bricks of Norma in stock for $58.99 It's supposed to be a lot like Wolf Match from what I have heard. Put this brick together with the CCI and you'll be within a dollar of $100. Use the code for $20 off and you got some darn good ammo for $40 brick.

Funny how picking up a couple 5K cases in the past didn't even raise an eyebrow. Now, a person with 4,000 mixed rounds in the house is considered a hoarder. My, how times have changed. :o I only wonder where we are headed from here?

Many Folks out there are/were unprepared I have purchased Zero ammo in the last year but have plenty I don't think being prepared is hoarding I started stocking up 2008 or so.

CCI SV, Norma and Rem GB all in stock and have been posted in the ammo thread. If folks don't now have rimfire ammo then that's that.

There is plenty available for those who want it.

I think we've pretty well covered all the bases on both sides of the discussion.

Cheers
