So Cal
Been stopping by the Walmart a couple mornings a week, and standing in line for the different holiday ammo sales for the last year. So when I decided to spring clean my safes and take inventory, I discover I had over 6k rounds of 22LR. I typically have 1.5k or less on hand but some how I have gathered this little stock pile. Any other caliber I own, would have been obvious. My bad, I will shoot the stuff and stop buying more.

That's not hoarding. I'd call the discovery a blessing and would build on what you have.

22 cal ammo

I have 7 grand children, 5 of them are old enough and enjoy shooting. I have 2 Savage youth guns for them to use. Right now I have about 14,000 rounds in the basement but if I see them I buy more, because I go thru a lot of ammo. I stopped in a gun shop in Wilmington, Delaware a couple of weeks ago and they wanted $70.00 a brick. Too rich for my blood but I will pay up to $50.00 a brick. I don't buy Remington, because of too many misfires.

that's not hoarding..that's being frugal

i've been buying when i can...i'm up to over 4000 and i had planned on lowering that by now, but the deer ticks on my outdoor range are pretty bad...and my employer seems to think that i like working every weekend too...my 12 yr old has been disappointed that we haven't been able to shoot much...

I only have about 3200 rounds of mix brands. Then a couple hundred shorts. I used to like shooting 22's but its pretty bad i can shoot my 38 spl handloads for less than what 22 lr is selling for.

Funny how employers always think that we have nothing better to do on a weekend than work.

Two sons, their wives and four grandchildren that I supply 22 for. Since I'm the one with the time to stand in line thats what Granma does, stand in line to get the 22lr.

I'm a youngster, my high school and college daughters (and wife) won't shoot with me. And for some reason my daughter's boyfriends don't like my guns. So, what I'm hearing is to keep the pile going for my grandchildren. I now have clarity, can not wait for the 4th of July sale, and the 2 hour wait for the $25 brick (2 per customer).

I am sorry, but I see what most will not discuss - a prime example of why many of us can not buy a single box of 22 ammo!! In the area that I live, I have been only been able to buy one brick in the last 2 years! I have stood in line many times, but am always beat out by gunshow sellers that want to sell me the $20 brick they just bought for $80! Why can they do this? Because of mass hoarding.

Hoarders are not considering the fact that many shooters can not but ammo for their use because others have 10,000+ rounds in their homes.

To put a cap on my rant - our club has an annual youth fun shoot, plus a 4H Firearms Training Course this summer and have not been able to find any 22 ammo for the events. Over the years, the kids have shot a thousand rounds every year at each event, but this year it will be pellet guns.

BULL. There is no shortage of 22lr ammo. Now a shortage of "cheap 22" may exist for some who are unwilling to put the effort in to secure it but that is on you. You have known about this event now for a whole year and have done nothing to solve your problem. In the time it took you to write and post your rant you could have ordered all of the 22lr you could ever need but you didn't. You instead decided to blame others for your utter failure to ensure these kids had 22 for their event. You had a full year to make it happen and you failed. You and every adult associated with this event failed these children not some fellow gunowner with 22lr on the shelf at home. You and vey adult associated with this program failed because you eer oo busy or to cheap to order the ammo online. Gunbot.net has all of the 22lr you could ever need. Granted its not 2 cents a round but if these kids are important to you then the price is of no concern and you will secure th 22lr you need.

Well, look at it this way. 6k will certainly get you through "lean" periods like we're having now, especially if you shoot lots of .22 LR. You built your stores piecemeal instead of buying it all at once in a panic like some other people have.

It's also quite admirable that you've decided to show a little temperance now that you know how much you've amassed.

LadyT, you are just as wrong as you can be... just look on line at some of the posts you will see about those who go out and buy thousands and thousands of .22 LR rounds at every opportunity and then re-sell at an inflated price. I am sorry, but greed exists, and there is nothing you can do about it.

And if you think there is no shortage of 22 LR ammo, I encourage you to go out to your local brick and mortar gun shop and pick up a few thousand rounds. I will wait for you to get back...

Price has nothing to do with availability... nothing. There are those that will spend rent and milk money just to be able to post on line that they have 50-60k of 22 LR. And not all of us have unlimited liquid income, either. I don't speak for all of us, but as a Stage IV cancer patient on 2500/month, spending $.15/round to shoot my 617 is cost prohibitive. The above post that says it is cheaper to shoot 38 handloads is spot on.

Mother/grandmother mode... yeah, right. You might try getting in the "reality mode". One "supplier" I deal with on a semi-regular basis has recently sent mass e-mails trumpeting 22LR ammunition for sale with no limit... the problem is, the stuff is priced at $.20/round, and to get any sort of a break requires you to buy 10K or better.

Ok, I will shut up now. I just firmly disagree with your post.

For a 4H or Hunter's Safety program you need to contact the manufacturer. For the last couple of years Federal has had a very limited amount for direct sale for these programs. I'd bet that any available for this summer is already gone, however.

I sold a case of .22LR to my local Hunter's Safety program last summer at my cost because they missed out on the limited amount available from Federal. I understand that donations or people selling ammo to these programs at cost is fairly common. You don't need to buy from a LGS or Walmart if the word is put out about actual need.

Like I said. There is no shortage of 22lr just a shortage for some of cheap 22lr. Just look at gunbot.net and you will find all of the 22lr you could ever want. Granted its not 2 cents a round but it is available.

As you have so poignantly pointed out in your post the problem is not availability as the email you received proves the point. The problem is simply price. People have to accept that the era of cheap 22lr has come and gone. Simply, it is no more unless you are willing to stand in line but prices are still going up. The demand is greater than the production capacity by several times and that pushes prices up with no end in sight.

Now in the past 10 days which have been the best 10 days in the last 18 months as far as 22 is concerned I have managed to pick up at my local Academy two 1400 count buckets of Remington which is the cheapest ammo available in my area , one 300 count box of CCI chootem, two 50 count boxes of CCI SV, 3 bricks of CCI 22long (no limit), 1,000 rounds of Hornady 22mag (no limit) and there are some 3,000 rounds of 22 short (no limit)still on the shelf. Its there, you just have to be there when it comes in if you are looking for less expensive ammo compared to online prices but that gap continues to narrow. Also understand it doesn't always come every delivery day but we see some at least once a week on average.

First "there is no shortage", then "the demand is greater than the production capacity by several times...". HUH?????

Okay, I quit. I cannot follow that circular reasoning, so I will respectfully refrain from what others might consider a frivolous response. But in closing, I note that in the last two weeks you yourself have apparently accumulated 5700 rounds of 22LR and 22 Magnum, if my math is right. That compares quite favorably with the number from the original poster, and he considered himself to be hoarding, albeit accidentally, (He also stated he would quit buying....)

Hmmmm.....

Enjoy shooting your .22s. Others of us will just wait and hope, I guess.

Are you sure you are a lady? You do not live where I live, so keep this civil!

Here is what the committee has done over the last year.

1. We have always ordered our 22 ammo for the club through the CMP. We placed an order 6 months ago and were promised ammo by May 1st. They responded the end of April that due to HIGH demand, they cannot fill our order.

2. We have 3 stores that sell ammunition within 50 mile radius and 2 of them were monitored every week when the shipment comes in. Dunham's replied that they have received one bucket of 22 ammunition in the last 2 months, so they did not have any ammo! Walmart stops have also been fruitless. Their shipments are not weekly, so we can only rely on the employees to tell us when the best time to show up is, but never got one stinking box. The third option is a small gunshop and they told us not to even bother, since the owner has not seen a box for the last 3 months.

3. I and others have tried to buy online and have placed our names on various waitlists, but so far nothing has panned out there either.

4. We regularly attend gunshows, but I WILL NOT PAY $80 for a brick! These are the very people who contribute to the problem!

So, LadyT, do you have any other suggestions, or do you just like to post derogatory remarks skip out?
