Just about every year or so I review my credit card statement and find unauthorized charges. I'm now doing this on-line rather than waiting for the statements in the mail. This morning I saw that someone went shopping yesterday.

Called the card issuing company and reported the charges to be contested. About an hour later I had a cancelled card with a new one to be sent soon.

A new twist this time! That account pays me cash back on every purchase so I use it regularly, then write one check each month. Saves me writing a dozen checks every time I need a tank of gasoline or a sack of groceries, etc. I see that my cash back rewards have been reset to zero with the replacement card.

Bummer!

Don't forget to check your account statements regularly. There seem to be a lot of people out there looking for new ways to rip us off every day.

I made an on-line purchase last week with a well known competition sling manufacturer and within 60 minutes I was contacted by my credit card issuer to verify numerous questionable purchases. 4 fraudulent charges to 4 different vendors in about 10 minutes time before they finally maxed out the card. We got the fraudulent charges flagged and the 1 valid charge processed before the card was cancelled. I only have the 1 credit card and this credit card issuer WILL NOT expedite sending out a new card, so I just had to make due (probably saved me some money). This happens once or twice a year and it's a pita. Thinking back, I am positive I had the exact same issue with fraudulent charges popping up immediately after placing an order with the same vendor several years ago. I am fairly sure it is not them because they have been around for a long time, but probably their cc processor has been compromised.
I log in and check all my bank accounts and my credit card account every morning, after checking the obituaries of course.

I would call the cards "security number" and talk with them not the regular phone answering people. A little polite talking and I think you will be able to get your cash back money restored.

I have my credit card app notify me when I get any charges where the card is not present. It has saved my bacon several times, most importantly when a card with a $6500 limit was used to fully purchase a car in Florida for $9500. I and my wife were both in MT at the time. A phone call fixed that in 20 minutes.

I also get charges that I have the receipts for that never show up on my bill. They get lost electronically from big stores, WM, gas stations and so on. Not a lot but 6 or 7 times a year. I have been told stores eat the loss as doing business and still prefer cc usage. I spoke to a store several times about lost charges and they say they will check into it, or there's nothing they can do. In most cases, the time spent to recover $30 would be more than the savings to have the $$.

Smart decision, I check my account once daily online just to make sure everything is correct.

There's an on line company that sells products that helps one to organize their gun safes. Every time I purchased through their website, my credit card was compromised.
I still use their products, but now I buy through a local gun shop.

When contracting near Russia I checked both credit cards and my debit card/bank account at least daily. The reason I had two credit cards was to have a spare while another was shipped to me after one had a fraud cancellation. In Asia and Africa I was cautious as well. If I had one card cancelled, I'd get a stash of cash from one of the remaining cards in case a second card was compromised. Do NOT be without money or valid cards internationally!

Foreign air carrier ticket purchases were the most risky, but not an 'every time' problem at any means.

Or the software they are using is not up-to-snuff, security-wise.

I don't check every day, but I do carefully reconcile every charge on my monthly statement with notes/receipts that I have kept. I also receive text alerts for any charges over a set amount.

If you had a significant amount of cash back coming , call them. The CC company just grabbed it for themselves.

I hate new cards. Then I have to memorize another number.:(

Very good information.

After dealing with the fraud on one card in the morning I went to get groceries in the afternoon, entered my second card (used infrequently) and the charge was denied. Late evening I received a call from that company wanting information about a potential fraud attempt on that card. That remains to be resolved, but since the charge was denied there is no immediate damage.

Fortunately I had my poker and beer money tucked away in my wallet and was able to pay for the groceries. Now I just need to get everything straightened out so life can return to normal.

I would get by without credit cards entirely if we could. But in these modern times a card is necessary for hotel reservations, car rentals, airlines, etc. As stated in my original post I use the card primarily for convenience, and the cash back is nice about once each year, just about taking care of a monthly card balance.

I've never used ATM machines, never taken a cash advance, and do very little on-line stuff. My Amazon account has its own credit card and is only used there.

You can set your credit card preferences on major cards to text your cellphone immediately when a transaction is denied - you reply 'yes' (it's your transaction), or 'no' and the sales just remains canceled. Much cleaner way to deal with denied charges, especially if far from your landline.

I've got a card through Amazon. It gets hacked/stolen every 9-15 months. Either they call us or we see a strange charge on the card. So far we haven't paid for any fraudulent charges and our points automatically get transferred to the new card.
Seems like first world life in the 21st century.

I check my accounts at least once a week!
I just had a card compromised last week and I can't begin to tell you how many cards I've had changed over the years. The last one was in 2023, a Chase card. I elected for a free monitoring program that they offered and now, if they suspect a fraudulent charge, I immediately get a text asking me if it's legit. I wish more card providers would offer the same service...especially with the interest rates they charge!
Luckily, I rarely carry a balance for more than 60 days.

Some will discount if paying cash and most 4-5% surcharge for plastic.
YMMV

I get a text every time my debit is used and where. Don’t use credit cards very often. In fact the last time I used a credit card to buy some gun thing or another about two weeks later the card was used to purchase concert tickets in Belgium. If that wasn’t bad enough the band was some kind of metal band or some such.

I took this one step further. For every credit card I have the card issuer send my cell phone a reference to every transaction. Those scammer aren't going to get far on my dime!

I signed up with my bank to send out daily transaction summary (includes c card charges and bank generated payments) - look at it every morning. Last year had a cc thief who bought ~$600 in pet food. Bank cleared that up quickly.
