They are capable if YOU are. They are intended to be a personal defense CCW or back-up to a larger CCW. They are for close quarter (7-10 yard) shooting. They have a heavy trigger pull, a small grip, significant recoil (due to their light weight) and are not really a lot of fun to shoot at the range, in my opinion. Use them for their primary intended purpose and they can hardly be beat! Use them for a range gun and a lot of other revolvers beat them hands down!

I shoot my 442, 49 and Chiefs Special (pre-36), along with my 686 at the range at least monthly and usually every other week. I put between two and four boxes of ammo through them, altogether, on each range visit. I shoot standard pressure 38 special factory ammo only.

It is my expectation that, if I were to live that long, I could do this for the next 25 years and not make any progress at wearing out any of these guns.

Good luck with your search.

I shoot my M642 often at the range because it's my SD handgun and you need to practice with your carry gun. That said I rarely shoot more than 100 rounds at a time from it and most times not even that many. Like said above, it's really not a fun range gun.

If you're looking for a J frame for the range I would suggest buying one of the all Steel J frame revolvers available from S&W. You can practice a 100+ rounds from the heavier gun without a problem, especially if you put a comfortable set of grips on it.
