Alaska State Police sidearms?

I'm reading a, "Criminal Minds" fan fiction set in Alaska. The writer hasn't mentioned what the Alaska State Police uniforms look like, nor has he mentioned their guns. If he's like most authors, he hasn't a clue. He has been to Alaska twice, but probably didn't delve into such things as a tourist.

We used to have a member who was a trooper there or an Anchorage cop. I forget which. He pictured his duty jacket and his M-28 here awhile back.

I'm pretty sure they no longer use revolvers. Anyone here know their official sidearm and any optional carry items?
Thanks.

See the "Tales Of The Gun" thread.

The gent you refer to with the photo of his jacket and M-28 was an Anchorage city cop. When Anchorage PD phased out revolvers, they went to Glock 21s and 22s for issue, but allow just about anything else. There's a lot of 1911's and a few Sigs and HK's around as well. Anything from 9mm, 40, .357sig, .45 and 10mm is good to go too.

The Alaska State Troopers went from their .357 S&W's revolvers to S&W 4006 .40s as their first semi auto. They are now packing Glock 22s.

No, I haven't seen any state police shows except for a couple of episodes on Discovery/Animal Planet about DPS troopers (not Rangers) operating in south Texas. I do watch North Woods Law, about Maine game wardens when I find it on. Usually, they're running some junk like the Turtle Man series.

I can't get a good look at the holstered Maine wardens' guns. Anyone know what they use? So far, I haven't seen them draw their weapons, although one guy carried what seemed to be an M-4 carbine spinoff while looking for dope growers.

One warden realized that he was between a bear and bait left out by a poacher. The bear ambled around growling and being visible, apparently hoping to scare the man off the food. But the warden never drew his pistol, and the bear gave up and left.

I'm not too familar with Glocks beyond the M-17 and M-19. Are the 22 and 23 in .40 Cal.? I think it's mainly .40's that have blown out cases due to insufficient case head support?

I've never owned a .40, but it seems a good load, if not especially accurate in most guns. From what I've read, the CZ'
s in .40 shoot quite well, so it's probably a gun issue, rather than an inherently inaccurate ctg. design. I was, BTW, very pleased with my CZ-75B 9mm, which my son now owns. I had to replace it with a Beretta 92FS, because I have peripheral neuropathy, which saps my muscle strength. The P-38 type locking system on the Beretta allows easier slide operation. Pistols using the Browning-Petter locking system are harder to unlock.

Many thanks! Are the Glock 22's .40 cal.? I don't know Glocks well.

Do you know why they dropped the S&W 4006? I believe the California state police still use it? (But I think I see SIGs and maybe Glocks on the CA Bureau of Investigation agents on The Mentalist. This may or may not reflect real life. I guess I'd better check that show on MovieGun Imbd or whatever it is. The Mentalist is among my favorite shows, although I think Patrick Jane is often an elitist jerk.)

Do Alaska troopers have the gun choice that Anchorage PD does?

BTW, in the story mentioned, the author has the state cops hosting the FBI BAU team using ATV's to get around on an island where serial murders are happening. He acknowledged that he knows they use 4X4 vehicles, but thought the ATV's would be a nice touch. Wouldn't surprise me if they do have ATV's for specialized use, though.

It is very rare for an author to mention police guns by type or to describe uniforms or vehicles. I'd like to thank SIG P-220 again for his help in viewing Navaho Tribal Police uniforms and vehicles to help me better visualize the late Tony Hillerman's novels about them. As many of you know, SIG P-220 is a FBI agent investigating serious crime on Indian reservations. His posts are invariaby interesting and informative.

I mentally turn words into images, so I actually sort of watch a book as i read it. It helps to know just what to visualize.

Last I heard AST issues Glock 22's.

California Highway Patrol had S&W 4006's and switched to the 4006 Tactical or 40 something TSW.

Talked to a CHiPpie two weeks ago and he said the new 4006 is a piece of s*&t. He said most have had to go back to S&W for repairs.

CA State Parks had 4006's as well and I believe switched to M&Ps about a year ago.

Your Avast is mistaken.;) It is NGS for goodness sake. I may be contaminated but not them.

About every LEO agency in the Country uses Glocks 40 SW (yes I know some don't)

40SW only blows out after constant reloads in unsupported chambers. The Browning HP was they same. Newer Glocks have better chambers. My SW Shield in 9mm bulges cases with +P ammo
The CZ75 is IMO one of the finest handguns ever. Many many clones of it out there

Yes - the Glock 22 is a 40s&w.

The Troopers only get the Glocks and not the selection Anchorage PD does.

As to vehicles, APD has regular sedans, 4x4s, Quads, Polaris Rangers and snowmachines to name a few of their available get arounds.

AST has all that plus planes, helicopters and boats too.
