So, when my wife and I had just moved to OK, we were renting a townhouse/apartment. It was two flights of stairs just to get to our bedroom and at the very bottom, there was this cheapy alarm system. Well, one day around 6am, I awoke to voices in the hallway and the hall light was on. Knowing that we NEVER leave lights on at night, I reached for my M&P 9mm and took aim at the door awaiting the intruders. About that time, I hear a knock at the bedroom door, followed by "Police." Well, still a little hesitant, I did swing my gun away from the door and toward the nightstand. A second later, 2 local police officers entered our bedroom with flashlights and sidearms drawn. They quickly realized that we were the owners and holstered their pieces.

As I was walking them down to let them out, they explained that our door had been 'jimmied' open with what looked to be a screwdriver, but had been scared away by our alarm going off. (which neither my wife, child, nor I heard from upstairs)

As I let them out, we were joking about odds and ends, when I wold him that they had almost got two to the chest had he not called out with "police." He started laughing and said that he had warned his partner on the way up the stairs that he didn't want to get shot this morning. Apparently, the officer had seen one of my gun cases downstairs and figured that I was probably going to be prepared. LOL

Let me know what you guys think about that.

Well, I don't think I would have done any different. That, IMHO, was how it was supposed to work. Well done on everybody.

aside from leaving some non sequitur. That could of turned out very badly if the LEO failed to announce his presence. Or if you got flinchy. Close calls like those are the type that keep you up at night. Agreed on moving too.. Found out across the street from my townhouse the wife and I were renting was a meth lab. We moved a month later.

Thanks. I agree with you. I'm just glad that they made their presence known. Otherwise, it would have been a very bad day for all parties involved.

You just never know how your going to react in a situation like that. I have to admit that I was shaking a little afterward.

Want to guess who would be charged and go to jail?

I'm sure it would be me. But, had they not announced themselves, it would have been justified. Although, I am aware that it would not go down like that in court.

On another note, I would have also lost the gunfight, as they had body armor and I was in my boxers lol

I have been in several that could have turned out bad, but this one sticks out in my mind the most:
1972 on a very hot day in palmdale california. I was fooling with a .36 colt navy replica, maybe had been cleaning it. I also was on the phone as a friend had called me. I heard rusty my hound dog yodeling as someone was at the door. I laid the revolver on a coffee or end table, told friend to hang on, there was someone at the door. I opened the door and a old gray headed deputy stood to one side and a plain clothed dick to the other side. The dick said somebody with a truck exactly like mine had just robbed a business downtown. I said well, it wasnt me or that truck! He said have you drove it? Thank God I hadnt, but I said hey, it`s almost a 120 degrees here! I started to unlatch the hood and a third very young deputy came around from the other side the truck that I hadnt seen. This kid`s face was beet red, and I knew he must have been highly adjitated! He had a pump shotgun on me! The dick felt the engine, says sorry, and they left without another word.
I sure am glad I didnt answer the door with that unloaded BP replica in my hand! I guarantee you I would have been a dead fool that stupidly threatend the heroic officers that night on the news!

Even Michael Jordan couldn't have came out of that one good!

One can never say for sure how you will react to a situation like that. I can honestly say I would have probably done the same, but who knows for sure until the excrement is flying towards the fan. Nowadays you hear of alot of home invasions where the crooks yell out something like "Police" just to catch the people inside off guard. Just glad no one got hurt.

WOW feralmerril, what an ordeal. Glad it all worked out for you.

That's EXACTLY why I didn't put my gun away fully. But, a criminal probably wouldn't turn on my lights and chat up each other in the hallway either.

I spent 35 years working security. Once I was guarding a artical out at edwards AFB. We had a section of several hangers. It wasnt unusual to be tested by various security agents from certain various goverment programs. We got a alarm and my partner chased it, couldnt find anything and came back to my post. Soon we got another. This time I said I dont belive we could have got two bogus alarms 10 minuets apart seperated only a short distance apart. This probley was about 3 am, and only he and I were suppose to be in the area. All entrances were locked. I was pretty sure we were being tested, but you never knew that for a fact and have to play the game.
Now had it been anyplace else I would have been armed but since this was a AFB we werent suppose to be. (Still, a sane agent shouldnt take that as gospel either, we all dont always play by the rules 100% of the time.)
I got out in the dark hanger and this fool yelled out, put em up, I got a gun on ya! I played the game and he came out of hideing. Actualy I knew who he was although I dont think he knew that I did for some reason. He was a overeager black guy that was trying to make a name for himself. We got into it. I had been tried other times but never was another security rep stupid enough to say he had a gun on me!

Okay, here is another. I have told some incidents before about this lady. I met this poor but lovely soul back in 2001. I was freshly retired, single, and had problems with my dad that had alzheimers. I was walking into a resturant and this girl was asking the waitress where the nearest drug store was. So happened I was headed there myself after coffee with my pals. She waited on me, and we went together. She had just smashed her vehicle, was broke and stranded. I took her to my house so she could call her daughters in canada. She had a wild sorry tale. American hippy that married and divorced in canada, came back to the states to care for a thug paralised brother etc. She was a recovering addict that was looking for a local rehab to straighten herself out. Called the rehab, couldnt take her for a week. I had a 4 bedroom and she got her foot in the door.
She did go to rehab, done well and came back. By this time she heard about my dad with alzheimers, said she used to take care of alzheimer patcents on a past job. We struck a deal. I would go and get dad and she would take care of him for board. I thought she was sent by God, plus she could have doubeled for sally field!
We tried it, but dad let me know from the top he wasnt going to stay with me long and wanted to go home to wisconsin. She did well for about 6 months or a year. Finaly dad went home, I put him in a rest home and he got worse. "Sally" smashed up a vehicle I had given her, was badly injured and got hooked again on pain killers.
She got very bad, caused me much grief and money, had no place to go, I didnt have the heart to put her out on the street. Several times I was sleeping, she hallucinated that there was a burglar in the house and called 911 without even wakeing me up! I was woke up with a flashlight in my eyes and a pistol almost in my face! This happened twice. It could have been a catasphery as you might imagine I always had a revolver, maybe hidden under the mattress. Finaly me and the shift deputys were on a first name basis. They wouldnt come when she called! I met my now wife, and she even helped me baby sit her!
Then sally got cancer. I paid for her daughters to come and get her. I bought them a vehicle to haul her back to canada. A few weeks later she died. Theresa and I happened to get married the day the girls had her memorial service. I still am in touch with sallys daughters. They are both beautifull hard working women now. One is now married, the other isnt. Their mother caused me much grief and exspense. She was a very sweet beautifull woman that fought demonds, died sober. I hold no ill will, and am confident she is okay.

Many years ago, early in the morning, I was on patrol next to the Canadian Border when I observed a taxi from Montreal coming down a back road. I stopped the vehicle and found its driver and 2 other occupants, both who spoke Greek but (according to them) no English. I had them out of the vehicle, standing side by side, until the Border Patrol arrived. In the meantime one of them says something to the other and puts his hand into his coat pocket, raising it like he had a gun. My finger squeezed the trigger of the 28 and the hammer was coming back when I saw the expression on his face. Something said stop and I did. Turns out he said to his friend, in Greek, "I guess the officer thinks I have a gun". Lucky for us both I didn't know the word "gun" in Greek, and saw the look of sudden and total fear in his face, because otherwise he would have been shot. How close we sometimes come. (They were illegals being smuggled in).

Wouldn't have been a court date, probably a body bag, even if you would've got a few off on the first officer the partner would've finished it, glad everything worked out just like it should.

Body armor versus boxers... 2 against 1... middle of the night and dark... I think, considering all things, it worked out well and exactly the way it should have.
