Amazing how good cops could shoot in the 50's

Did you ever wonder why Broderick Crawford had a driver in some of the episodes?
I was told decades ago that he did not have a valid drivers license and did not drive on public roads. He did drive on the studio property.

Not one single solitary episode of Highway Patrol stands out in my mind. All I remember is that I loved watching it as a kid.

Broderick Crawford was a highly underrated actor, too, in my opinion.

I also read that he played the role of Lenny in Of Mice and Men on stage. I'd love to have seen him do that in a film version.

I barely remember one episode where they were after a perp who had a bazooka.

BC did “All the King’s Men” (Oscar) and “Beau Geste”. Excellent actor.

I think a lot of cops could shoot pretty good in the 50s since many practiced slow fire bulls eye shooting. In the early 70s I was with my dad getting some fence materials in Tulsa near 11th and Sheridan when a Volkswagen beatle bug raced around the corner with two police cars chasing it. The Beatle bug stopped and the driver started running away and a cop stood sideways and put his left hand on his hip and pointed his gun in the sky. He then slowly lowered the revolver and fired and hit the guy running in the back of his thigh. The guy was clutching his thigh and limping and he didn't go much further and it looked like pretty impressive shooting (but I'm not sure that's what the cop was aiming for).

I remember a Forensic Files episode where a flat on his back mortally wounded cop fired one round at a rapist/shooter escaping in a car. IIRC they eventually found the vehicle with a hole in the front seat indicating the perp had been hit.

It took years, but the perp was found. Part of the positive ID was a healed bullet wound in the guy’s upper torso.

I knew a fellow who wrote for Highway Patrol. He said Crawford, when chasing felons on camera, would shout: "Get ready to cut!" then double over for several seconds huffing and puffing before resuming the chase.

I read from another source that dialog scenes were typically shot in the AM because in the PM Crawford sometimes had difficulty remembering lines.

The guy actually was at a reasonable weight for his age, but had a roly-poly face. Like most guys back then, though, I’m sure he did several packs of cigarettes a day, plus a nip or two.

I am always amazed when I hear stuff on the News- that 7 Cops discharged 47 rounds and barely winged the perp but killed a fellow officer in the may-lay! QUITE SAD!

IIRC, I saw Barnaby Jones shoot a sniper who was on top of a skyscraper. Barnaby was armed with a Chief's Special. :)

Given how many times Barnaby Jones got shot in the shoulder, I'm amazed he could still lift an arm to shoot.

Getting shot in the shoulder isn't the flesh wound hollywood thinks it is.

Got quite a mental picture of a Beetle in a high speed chase, then I pictured the same chase in a Peel P50. Funny stuff, kinda like the old black and white movies in faster speed.

So what? Remember how The Lone Ranger and Roy Rogers always shot the guns out of the hands of the bad guys? Now that's some real shootin'! *s*

Steve McGarrett was pretty good with his Chief’s Special. I remember him deliberately wounding escaping bad guys with unaimed fire, often at considerable range. Don’t recall that he ever shot a gun out of anyone’s hand. Probably not enough of a hotdog maneuver for McGarrett. :D

I recall him taking out a sniper shooting one-handed with his CS.

I think he also played Harry Brock in "Born Yesterday." William Holden played the reporter who was hired by Harry Brock to educate Brock's girlfriend.

I played Eddie Brock, Harry's thug cousin, on stage in Chambersburg, PA.
