I live in Seattle, about 7 miles from Amazon HQ. We are kind of spoiled.
In large cities in the US, they usually have a local "hub" if you will, that stock something like the 10,000 most common items, and those ship same day. This is separate from the big warehouse south of here, halfway between Seattle and Tacoma, and close to our airport. If your local also has Amazon Fresh grocery delivery, they stock quite a lot of common items as well. I have ordered USB flash drives, and a SSD laptop drive, and they arrived in about 90 minutes.
About 5 miles north of me is our old N Seattle massive Sears store. Talk is that it will be converted to a massive local hub warehouse to service N Seattle up to Everett. LOADS of parking, and a huge apartment complex is almost finished a block away, where workers could live. The Sears lot is massive, with plenty of room for incoming semis bringing in product, and still acres of room for a fleet of local all electric delivery vans.
Living here you can understand how Amazon does business. I have numerous friends high up at Amazon, including my partner's ex-husband.
All that being said, they have some NASTY business practices. Shiny candy coating, rotten apple inside.
