Ammo for 40 cal ONLY

I just recently realized I have an ammo addiction. I've been stocking up on various rounds by various mfgrs. It's getting pretty snow covered up here so with no indoor ranges near I'll have to wait to spring to start shooting to make a decision on a carry round. But for now in my M&P 40c:

Target/Range:
Winchester White Box 180 Gr
TulAmmo 180 Gr FMJ (cheaperthandirt.com $11.69 per 50)

Carry:
Winchester PDX1 180 Gr JHP

In my LCP .380 ACP
Target/Range:
TulAmmo 91 GR FMJ
Winchester White Box 95 GR FMJ

Carry:
Hornady Critical Defense 90 Gr FTX

Also have these for PD carry
Federal 90 Gr Hydra-Shok JHP
Remington Golden Sabre 102 GR BJHP

For range ammo there's been a bit of a variety. Mainly 180 grain FMJ with some occasional 165 grain FMJ. Recently due to availability and price, it's been 180 grain Federal Champion from Walmart.

BTW, for long distance practice or precision shooting, the simgle most accurate ammo I've found is the Speer Lawman FMJ or TMJ. It's extremely consistent in velocity which for an ammo that will shoot very tight groups. While it is a bit spendy, if you want to try your hand at 50 yards or more, it's what I choose.

As for carry ammo, I have multiple 40 caliber handguns and have tailored my choice based on barrel length. For my P239 it's the 165 grain Speer Gold Dot. For the longer barreled guns it's the 180 grain Winchester Ranger T. As for my thinking, it's pretty simple, out of a short barrel a lighter bullet should achieve enough velocity to assure expansion.

For my P239 it's the 165 grain Speer Gold Dot.

The Gold Dot in 165-gr. is also a good choice because it's BONDED and therefore can provide about the same penetration (but not expansion) as the 180-gr. Ranger T (RA40T).

1. Winchester and Speer Lawman 180gr FMJ.
2. Winchester Ranger-T Bonded 180gr. (RA40B)
3. Ammunition To Go, great site.

After ALOT of testing, these are what Blasty Jr. likes best.

Practice ammo is WWB 165grain FMJ
Personal Protection ammo is Federal HST 165 grain JHP

Curios as to what others are shooting in there .40 cal.

If you do NOT shoot a 40cal than please start your own thread.

Well, most people here have assumed that you meant .40S&W, but there are a lot of other .40 caliber cartridges:
  • .38-40, or .38 WCF
  • .40 Eimer
  • .401 Boser
  • .401 Powermag
  • 10mm Automatic
  • .400 CorBon

Most of these are equivalent to, or more powerful than, .40S&W.
