Ammo ? for Ruger LCP

I don't know about the LCP specifically but I am new to the .380 as well having just picked up a Sig P230. I've picked up a thousand American Eagle FMJ for target shooting a few boxes of Buffalo Bore 100 grain +P HCFNL for defense purposes (1125 ME, 281 Ft Lbs). I'll report back on reliability after I hit the range for the first time.

I seen the Buffalo Bore +P but I don't know/think that little sucker could handle it! This is my first 380 also, seems like a good little gun, but I could be wrong?

Stay away from hollow points, the 380 doesn't get high enough velocity to reliably open them from the short barrels.

I have used Winchester White box (flat nose FMJ) with 100% reliability and good accuracy, and the new Hornady Critical Defense has excellent reviews. About any FMJ will give good penetration.

Mine is surprisingly accurate, when I can see the sights. It is intended for short distances, and mine will put them in a 3" or less spot from 10 yards.

My LCP shoots about anything. My favorite is a cast 105 gr SWC which feeds fine. I was surprised at that.

I agree with this statement, FWIW. I would carry ball ammo in a .380 if I were to carry a .380. For reliable function and penetration.

Do not shoot +P loads in an LCP. It's not rated for that hot a load. I've heard the same thing about hollow points in .380's. I still use them however. If it doesn't open reliably, doesn't that make it the same as a ball? I'm sure I'm about to get flogged for that statement. But there it is. I guess that's why I stick with the J-Frame and shoot +P .38's.

Firehouse,
IIRC, it was either our own Erich or Flop Shank(?) that near tore the snot out of a Kel-Tek(?) with the B/B stuff? In fact, I think there's a thread currently running near the top of the ammo area about it. I know nothing about the load, but there were several discussing it there that seemed to know their onions!

I carried Win White Box for quite a while in my Bersa, never had an issue with it. Found (finally) and switched to Hornady Critical Defense and no complaints yet.

Yes, I do remember that. And they are most probably correct. No arguments with their facts from me. Thanks for the reminder.

My LCP has fed everything I've put through it (around 600 rounds now). I carry Hornady Critical Defense ammo in it. It feeds perfectly and shoots accurately. The expansion tests and reviews say it expands and retains its bullet weight extremely well. It's my choice.

I started out with Speer Gold Dot, but switched to Hornady Critical Defense. Seems to be a very good and accurate round. I don't think anyone knows yet would these would do in an actual fighting situation.

I've shot some old Speer hollow points in mine with zero problems along with Winchester white box target ammo and Winchester HP's. One of our fine Forum members here sent me a box of Fiocchi hollow points and all I can say is don't even try to use them as the bind up in the mags. Must be a little too long I'm thinking. Good luck with the LCP, mine works great, Shoo

I'd be careful using Winchester White Box for defense. Not because of the FMJ bullets, but because WWB quality control seemed to take some dips during the recent ammunition shortage, particularly in bulk packs.

I've tended to use Remington's generic UMC line.

The old tech Silvertips were popular for years in .380s, though they probably under penetrate.
