Ammo price gouging.....

Nobody here is gouging...because they don't have any ammo on which to gouge anyone.

No ammo anywhere...no primers to reload with either.

Price gouging...hoarding...gun bans...too many people acting crazy in the gun world now-a-days...I'm going fishing.

This is kind of what I have seen in Florida after the hurricanes.
People doubling and tripling the price of water,
batteries, and other needed items.

Apples to oranges. Unless you live in a war zone, you can survive a week without ammo. Try going that long without water.

Wish we had water, I'd go fishing too:(

Magtech/CBC 7.62x51 NATO before Sandy Hook at my LGS $34.99 for 50 rounds, today his new stock arrived and is now $49.99 per 50. He has no .223, 9MM, 45 ACP, .38 Special or 7.62 x 39 all are back-ordered. The only thing more bare than his ammo shelves are his new gun racks and cases.

price gouging only applies to items of necessity such as bread, milk, gas etc... If people want to buy something when demand is high and supply is low they will pay a premium for it. Simple supply and demand at work. You may not like it, but it is what it is. People that are selling them now at elevated prices are gambling that they'll be able to buy them back when/if prices drop back down to normal. Those that paying the elevated prices are gambling that the prices will not fall.

Supply and demand.....how does it work?

I have to agree with what many have said. If you believe in capitalism and free enterprise then those that can buy low and sell high are abiding by the principals of free enterprise. Price gouging (IMO) can really only be an accurate accusation when the items that are being sold are essential for existence. Water, Food, maybe gas and electricity...things that would put someone in the street or threaten their existence. If you don't like it that ammo has tripled in the past month don't buy any. None of us will cease to exist without it. In fact the people that buy .233 ammo at $1.00 a round or a $500 handgun at $700 just fuel or validate the high prices. If no one bought 1 P-Mag at $60 then the price would come down. It is truly supply and demand.
You cannot have it both ways...endorse capitalism/ free enterprise, and then belly ache when supply drives prices up.

It's not gouging, it's capitalism, supply & demand. GOuging is when someone charges you more than reasonable money for something you need. 99% of us do NOT NEED ammo, we just want it. So it's buyer beware. You should have seen this coming as many of us did & bought BEFORE the election. I paid $300/K for PMC 223 delivered to my house in Nov. Now it would be cheap at $500. Just remember who the guys are over charging & don't buy from them when times get better & let them know that.

I got an email from SGAmmo yesterday telling me that they had case lots of CCI .22 LR SV in stock. I checked and they had 200 cases with a limit of 1 case, so I ordered a case. The interesting thing was the price increase, which only amounted to $20. Not exactly price gouging! There are some honest dealers out there and SGAmmo appears to be one of them.

Local shop near me wants $31.99 for a box (50 rounds) of American Eagle .38 fmj. He will never get another dollar from me again. Rather scope Walmart everyday and get it for what is is worth.

I know some people want to get their Adam Smith on, but flippantly throwing around the term "capitalism" with only a cursory understanding of the theory doesn't exactly help win minds or hearts. (This obviously doesn't apply to you if you are, for example, a student of economists like Milton Friedman. But I digress...)

The fact of the matter is that people are buying scores of ammo because of recent concerns over how the current administration was going to respond to the Newtown tragedy. Some, shall we say, more "unscrupulous" sellers picked up on this and pushed the envelope by raising their prices beyond what the general consensus would define as "reasonable" to see if some were "desperate" enough to pay the exaggerated asking prices. Sad to say, some people fell for it hook, line and sinker.

Is it "right"? Arguably not. Is it illegal? Sadly, no. Are the offending sellers going to heed their consciences and stop being greedy? I wouldn't count on it... In a situation like this, it's best to stay calm, not fall into the panic mindset, and take your business to sellers who don't engage in this sort of behavior. It's going to be inconvenient having to "shop around," but good deals are still to be had if you look hard enough.

Truth be told, I had a whole truckload of 9mm ammo I wanted to get rid of a while back, Speer 124 gr. +P Gold Dot and Winchester 147 gr. RA9T to be exact. I could've waited to sell it now, charged outrageous prices for it and probably have gotten away with it by virtue of the simple fact that it was all properly stored "duty" ammo in 50 rd. boxes. But you know what? It wouldn't have sat well with my conscience to fleece people who are panic buying.

Now, to add to the nuttiness, SGAmmo is selling out of cases of the Winchester Treasury Load. Yes, the TREASURY LOAD. I've been keeping an eye on their .38 Special inventory and it seems that this is what desperation will do to some people. In fact, I'd be willing to hazard a guess that it's sold out as I speak.

So, yeah... Enough of the "capitalism" references already.

If I had ammo to sell, which I do not, I would put it on Gunbroker with a reasonable starting bid and no reserve. If someone wants to pay me several times the value of the ammo, should I refuse on some moralistic basis?

$1000.00 for .22 LR that would have been awful lot of reloading components!!

LGS I frequent pulled his 223 when individuals started buying huge quantities, he put it up for those that bought his ARs etc. he did the same thing with the last election when .380 got real scarce.
This time even 40S&W is gone plenty of 10mm and 357sig at least there was a few days ago. Oh and no price gouging!! his prices while on the high side he has tried to look out for his regular customers

18 bidders have a 5250 round case of Federal #745 .36 grain 525 round bulk pack up to $700!! Delivered and the auction isn't over. That is 13.3 cents per round. Insane! $69.99 for a 525 round box. I bought one in October for $18.99.

Instead of people backing off and letting supply fill the pipeline, the hoarders and capitalists are scarfing up every round at whatever price. If bulk .22 is worth 13.3 cents per round, how much is Eley Tennex worth these days?

How about this-also on Gun Broker- 1000 rounds of American Eagle 124 grain FMJ 9MM is bid to $580 plus $35 shipping and 3% Credit card fee with 10 hours to go. That is $633.45 for 1000 9MM FMJ- or 63.4 cents per pop! Holy High Brass Batman! - Your 17 round Glock mag will cost you $10.77 to fill. The same ammo cost $240 per case delivered in November..

I have a shoot coming up and had to suck it up and buy
supplys.............

four 25lb bags of Lawerance lead shot at almost $50 a bag.

Best I could do with shipping charges vs state taxs added on to the sales cost. Just finding materials makes one happy, in my area........

Even the trap club stoped selling lead. Bummer.
