AN EXPENSIVE AND VERY EMBARRASSING MISTAKE TODAY

Not sure how you deduce this set of events, but if it makes you happier than it bounced down the parking lot as your wife entered or left the station, more power to ya'. As for your dialing problem, it's possible that the distortion caused by cracked screen could be unlocking your phone or not allowing it to lock, and then it could be stuck on dialing the last number you dialed. Kinda like when you spill beer on your keyboard and the "d" key sticks . . .

Here's a couple pointers:

Buy a $20 Bluetooth speaker for your garage. Phone stays in your pocket, audio is much better.

Buy a $40 to $80 case for your $800 phone. OtterBox and LifeProof make real nice ones.

Insurance for your $800 phone is about $10 a month. You won't get a brand new one, but you'll get a perfectly fine reconditioned one by next day air for the $50 deductible. If you do this a lot, it's money well spent. If you don't, the $80 case will protect it from anything short of the apocalypse . . .

Muss, Now you made me feel worse ....... :o I DO have a Bluetooth Speaker AND a phone case - just was not using them at the time which I normally do. I just "fudged - up" - no excuses, what else can I say? That's why I am so mad at myself! This is also the first phone I've owned that I did not take the insurance - never had to use it so I figured I'd be OK - well, I've learned my lesson with that as well!

My last phone (Iphone 5c) was free with a 2 yr contract with verizon.

Free?? No, you paid for it. What gets me about those deals is after the 2 year period is done the rate doesn't go down and lots of people keep on paying, kinda like continuing to pay mortgage payments after the mortgage is paid off.

I finally got an I phone a few months ago. I resisted as long as I could. It is possible your home owners insurance might help with the cost of the phone.

I've had good luck on phones on Amazon. Last one I bought was an iPhone 6s and a Refurb. If I recall correct it was a bit over 300. It has served me well and do not plan to upgrade anytime soon. I will say though I have never done anything like the OP and hope I will never but, you never know.

Anyway sorry to hear about his problem and hope he finds a replacement at a decent price.

Just me but Ida not made the original post.

I did it in a "mad at myself" mode - I guess to "punish myself" for being so careless. :o

I am not perfect - never said I am and I will make more mistakes in the future. That said, I am a person that learns from his mistakes and so I'll never ever do that move again!.

THE ONLY GOOD NEWS is that my relatively new SUV has a wireless charger in the Console and the iPhone 8 IS compatible with that, whereas the 7 was not. So while I'd not normally spend $800 bucks on that feature, at least I'll get something plus an even more awesome camera.

My last phone (Iphone 5c) was free with a 2 yr contract with verizon. Why have phones become so expensive? All of a sudden new technology is more expensive than less? I think it's a HUGE ripoff..
I just went to Verizon a few weeks ago to get a new phone. They no longer do contracts, so no free phones. But they will sell you a $500 phone and you can pay for it monthly with no interest. They are all heart!

I'm almost deaf and have a hard time understanding people on the phone. That's the only reason I have an I phone. The I phone streams directly to my hearing aids. I miss my old flip phone but you do what you have to do. Sorry for your loss chief38 I once drove off with my Ruger Security six on the roof of my truck.:o Luckily I saw it bouncing down the road in my rear view. New stocks and rear site and it was good to go.

Yeah, it could have been worse, like the local, very young police swat team member who drove off with his MP5 on the roof of his Cruiser.

I pay the insurance and have a current IPhone (8 Plus) as does my wife(8). It's ten bucks a month per phone and Ipad (yeah, got them, too ), but it covers dropping one in the toilet, off a boat (yep, done that with an office phone years ago) stepping on it, having it stolen or just about any way of breaking it.

We've tried buying and paying both ways that Verizon offers-add to our monthly bill, about $25 per phone (that's fifty bucks if you don't have your calculator handy) but I hated that, though we were blessed to be able to afford it. They don't charge any interest, but it is just the raising of the monthly bill by fifty bucks that I hated.

A couple of weeks ago we stopped by the Verizon Store and they offered us $252 for our old IPhones with bad batteries in trade on the new ones. I just paid cash for the phones less the trade in and am happy.

Someone's gonna think-"Hey, Apple is making good on those batteries that die early!" Yeah, but not for free and one has to make an appointment at the Apple Store in Tampa (think of horrible traffic), then go in and wait like at a doctor's office to be seen.

We considered just buying a battery from a cell repair store but she really wanted a new phone (she very rarely asks anything and this is little enough for what she's put up with from me over the years).

I am far below any definition of a techie, but I like the size of the Plus, so I can read/see the screen, I like the audio pods that work off the Blue Tooth and make all phone calls crystal clear (far better than with my hearing aids) and I like the service Verizon gives (even though I've caught myself getting mad at them from time to time).

My wife does a lot of photos and no longer uses her regular camera, always uses the IPhone's. Photos are great. Except those photos of me which always seem to come out looking like some old man.

I hope this event turn out to be a small speed bump in your life and you really enjoy the new phone.

chief38,

You're an honorable guy for tattling on yourself. Maybe, just maybe you'll save someone else from your unfortunate fate.

The good thing about hitting your finger over and over with the hammer is how good it feels when you stop.

You're safe. Your wife is safe. The Harley is safe. And your information doesn't seem to have been compromised so it's safe.

Keep smilin'

Funny one on me. Years ago before te smart phones, I had a Razer flip. GOt it wet and of course it wouldn't wor. Gave it to my wife (not telling he it got wet) and asked her to take it to the store and get it fixed as it was new and shouldn't be not working. Anyway I gwet this call from wife icily asking if I got the phone wet. In my best foghorn leghorn voice I strongly denied such a thing and asked her why in the world she would dare ask me something like that...It was then that I learned that there is some kind of chip or something inside the phone that turns green when wet. :o Bottom line I had to pay for a new phone, wife got a new car and I'm never to ask her again to return ANYTHING of mine :p
It would'a worked if I had gone there instead of her-she always rolls over and gives up after the first punch, me, well it just makes me stronger :D:D

I'll laugh at the old codgers who snark at the smart phone and refuse to get one and worse -- pretend that those of us who have and enjoy one are some kind of slave to technology that doesn't "need one but just THINK we need one..."

Meanwhile, I'll continue to find deal after deal after deal on all my gun related stuff, especially in finding phenomenal used handguns while the same old coots cry in a different thread that they never find a good deal on a used gun either.

As to the OP and needing to replace your phone, absolutely not... you don't need to drop $800 on a new one. Find a used one of an earlier generation and definitely don't worry about the battery. Any decent shopping mall will do an iPhone battery install for under $60 bucks while you wait, takes 20 minutes.

I access these forums and Gunbroker and communicate with everyone via my OOOOOOOLD iPhone 5s, using only my second battery. Using this phone since December 2014.

Traded my still functioning 6 for an 8, and love the bigger size.
I came into this world with nothing and will leave with nothing, it’s only money.

Its not a mystery of how the phone dialed you / home - its a setting that if you told the app it was lost, that is what it is designed to do, while on, it will try to contact you.

Very likely it just had a shattered screen, i.e. off the hood and onto the pavement, someone picked it up and laid it against the liht pole. Coiuld even have been run over.

Watched a local show, guy had two iphone 5's, he had an otter case on one and a cheap bezel case on another, both withstood, dropping, tossing and finally, being run over, etc, and the cheaper one broke finally when run over. but still worked. Both quit working when he took the cheap case off and the otter case and simply dropped them 6 ft.

Here’s another option - we were with Verizon forever. Switched to T-Mobile and they paid off the Verizon contract and $650 per phone. Got the kids new phones from Verizon, waited 30 days, switched to T-Mobile, and they paid off the phones. Competition is great. Monthly charge is less, too.

i bought a tracfone about a year ago for $19.....i use it to call the power company when the electricity goes out....otherwise it sets in the desk drawer and comes out when it need charging
