What is this reform wording on 218???

FYI - The current LEOSA Reform legislation has passed the House of Representatives and is currently in the Senate as S.679. Seems the senate isn't moving very fast. Might be appropriate to contact your senators and express your support for them getting it passed before the end of the calendar year.

Major points are: Qualifications no longer annually- could stretch out to 36 months. Could be qualified by any certified firearms trainer in your state of residence. Would be able to carry in locations currently banned including school zones, churches and parks. Just a couple......there's a bit more including standard capacity mags extended to RLEO's.

The Senate is back in session. Will Thune do anything? We need 60+ votes. The author of LEOSA Reform is Congresscritter Son Bacon of NE. He's been successful at getting it passed in the last 3 Congresses. He recently announced he's not running for reelection.
It's do or die to get this passed and signed into law.

I'm retiring and will be a 3 hour flight from my PD. But I will have to drive through enemy territory on a regular basis once retired so this is important to me.

I'm assuming we are talking about HR 218 qualification. So in many states, a civilian can walk into a gun store, buy a gun, and immediately start carrying it; no testing or weapon qualification is required. In other states, a civilian can buy a gun, go to the county Sheriff's office, fill out an application, pay some money, and then receive a CCW license with no testing or weapon qualification required. But retired, and thoroughly experienced LE Officers, who have carried and qualified with a firearm all of their lives, are required by HR 218 to qualify each year. This makes no sense.

Got to agree. I suspect a good % of former LEO's can outshoot a good number of "active duty" types.

Two weeks ago I renewed my LEOSA here in Nevada. Using a revolver or auto qualifies the retiree to carry a "handgun"

Hope the LEOSA Improvement Act 2025 passes, but it looks stalled in the senate. It would do several things, including increasing the qualification interval to 3 years.

I havent looked today, but the last version of the LEOSA update allowed the states to increase the qualification time from 12 months to 36 months. Not automatic upon passage. And a technical reminder. As a retiree you can always qualify with the agency you retired from, or with a licensed firearms instructor to the state standard of your state of residence. Some states have a strict single standard, some have a few choices and some have a state standard and also allow each agency to have their own. You have to do a bit of research about your state's rules. No longer in Ohio, but Ohio has reduced the state standard to 25 rounds with a twist, you can lose points for totally missing the target. At the same time they have an off duty standard of 8 rounds, and some instructors figure retirees are off duty, so thats all they have to do. There is also some dispute with respect to type of gun. No serial number is required by LEOSA but appears to require type. So qualify one auto and one revolver and be covered. Your mileage of course, and your states interpretations, may vary. Until the new amendments pass, if you only go to reciprocity states, your CCW is fine. Once they pass, if it matters to you, LEOSA will give you a bit more protection due to the school zone, etc. rules. But do read your state laws and rules as they are all over the map.
