Another question about a 617

It seems that the 617 has been pretty much unavailable (new ) for some time, now. I wrote S&W and asked when they would be available again. I was told that by this time they should be in production again. I mentioned this at the gun shop/range the other day and they really had a good laugh. I was wondering if anyone here had any connections or info about something like this?
I've seen them for sale online but I'd really like to be able to buy it from a local shop. I use a couple of local shops and they both treat me very well and I'd rather buy from one of them.

when I was looking for mine a couple of weeks ago I found a local shop that had two in stock. No one else had them, not even the major online sellers.

I did the same thing rlsbee did and Smith gave me the same information, they're in production now. They wouldn't tell me how many they were building, when they would be ready to ship or if I could have a distributor reserve me one. (I'm getting desperate!)
