I don't understand what is possessing people to do this....I do know that it is more fuel for the ANTI fire...I just found out today that there are a bunch of anti gun laws up for review in my state (Washington) and this will not help...my heart go out to the parents of these children and know that the children of this school will be affected for a long time...I wish I had the solution to this problem

I with you. I don't remember anything like these shootings when I was in school in late 50s and 60s. I'm sure the numbers are exaggerated somewhat due to the amount of continuous national news today.

As far as the anti-pro gun debate is concerned, both sides use these shootings to support their views. Don't believe either side has proposed a practical solution to the problem and not sure there even is one as long as people want to do these things.

I have noticed through the years that their have been "Fad" crimes. Atm robberies, car jackings, freeway shootings school and mall shootings etc. It seemed that we never heard of the crime before and once they got publicity every other warped drug burnt out cool dude wanted to get in on it.

What's to understand about humans.
I am of the opinion that ultra reporting makes copy cat shooters.
BUT---that is just my opinion.
Blessings

Yes sir! You nailed it! I understand about "the people have a right to know" and all aspects of the 1st amendment. News is news and the media is driven, ultimately, by the almighty dollar to not only report it but to sensationalize it, rationalize it, spin it, and slant it to garner the most attention.

The effects that their coverage has on society and the ability of law enforcement to do their job along with other issues is always, ALWAYS secondary.

There is a nation full of lunatics out there with the capability and desire, to commit the most violent and shocking crimes and be "famous" courtesy of the media in this country. All they are lacking is the inspiration. That one little incident or event that will trigger the call to action.

It's a problem and I don't know what the solution is.

You can't leave a store with a pair of jeans with the security tag on them but a child can enter a school with a gun??? Come on people, let's get with the program for God's sake. The technology is available but not being used.

Just sad. I don't know what the problem is today. I am 56 years old. When I was that age, things were settled with fist, mostly a glorified wrestling match. Teacher seen it, they would break it up and send us on our way. After that the issue was settled.

Oh, I forgot, myself and other kids my age back then had access to guns. The only difference is we never thought of shooting anyone!

What changed?

Guns are now demonized.

Shootings are glorified and made a spectacle of on the news.

Kids are taught to compartmentalize their problems and "tell a teacher or counselor" instead of taking care of things themselves. Usually the victim is in as much trouble as the aggressor either way, so there are no resolutions to problems.

The list goes on...

Not in my school. A fight on school grounds got us a quick trip to the Vice Principal's Office, a phone call to our parents, and sent home for the day. I know from personal experience. However, one enlightened teacher would referee a boxing match. If two guys had a conflict, they could put on gloves, step into the ring, and have a couple minutes of boxing. The referee made sure no one was hurt. End of conflict.

Today, I feel that the news media inspires copy cat crimes. The video game and the entertainment industry de-sensitizes children to violence.

Society is screwed! Everyone wants something for nothing. If society as a whole was still thought that nobody is equal and you will get out of life what you put into it, dumb***es like this would move on when they don't get their way. But instead they throw a fit and go on a shooting rampage and are noticed. Just like when they didn't get the toy they wanted and threw a fit, and got the toy they wanted.

When I was that age the fear of what my old man and where he would put his size 12 foot, just the thought of it had me afraid to do anything wrong.
I kissed the cement floor many times. Me being the youngest of the four boys I caught he'll in all directions. Just the fear of the old man kept me out of trouble. I'm 63yo and seen it getting worse over the years.

I just don't understand we're all the hate comes from to just kill people. Can the bullying be that bad or relentless? Aren't these guns locked up?
Is there that many ignorant gun owners out there? You trust your children in your home with loaded guns in the home.

When will it all stop. There is so much hatred in these kids why?

I agree that the over reporting of the news reporters of today does wear things out. The report these shootings for days, weeks to even years.

the one thing we have to look at is the number of people in our country right now...when I was in school in the 50's and 60's there was a whole lot less people and wacko's...I totally agree that the media hype has a lot to do with this problem but there is an amendment for that one too...there was a stabbing at one of our middle schools not long ago that didn't stay in the news for very long...it is all about spin now and what will captivate our attention...boy I am glad I have this forum to rant on!!!!!

just enough info in it to call it out as something else.
one statement says the boy shot was THE target, not random mayhem.
Domestic violence over spill? Gang hit? settled grudge? ... it'll be gone before that comes out

^^THIS^^ is the difference. When we were kids there were no violent video games, and the kind of CGI carnage that we see in today's movies didn't exist (mainly because so much of it really can't exist outside of a computer).

Desensitization to violence leads to more real violence. People become capable of actually DOING these things because they have seen them done so much that the horror aspect of it has been conditioned out of their mental processes.

Every time the subject of limiting or removing the violence from entertainment comes up, the entertainment industry says that this whole idea is absurd. They say that people know the difference between the screen and real life. They claim that watching carnage on the screen isn't going to influence people to actually do those things.

Then those same folks turn right around and try to justify charging a MILLION DOLLARS for a 15 second commercial during the Superbowl - on the premise that seeing your product on screen will influence people's behavior and cause more of them to buy your product.

Leave it to Hollywierd to raise hypocrisy to the level of an art form...

We need armed teachers etc. As soon as several of these idiots are shot dead as soon as they stick their worthless heads in the door with a gun, this stuff will cease. No glory, just a bullet, is an amazing behavior changer.

In the end though, it all comes back to lousy parents, a screwed up educational system and a lack of personal responsibility in our society, along with the most important factor, the removal of God and decency from America, one little chip at a time. We reap what we've sown as a Country.

Sorry for the rant, I'm simply sick of the hand wringing and this stuff occurring, while our pathetic society acts like it's a mystery why it's happening or how to fix it. Meanwhile, a bunch of innocent kids die so the weak minded/progressives can have their way and try to use these events to take our guns.

I don't mean to be insensitive to the families involved but this will not make national news for more than a day or two, if at all. There simply wasn't enough killed or injured and most likely it wasn't an AR or AK used so it doesn't play into the agenda of gun-control mouthpieces.

Keeping guns unloaded and locked up is not the answer. That is the same kind of thought as a gun free zone. The answer is to teach children to be responsible for their actions and to control themselves and to live decent lives. I was reared in a house with loaded guns. Pap said if he had time to get a gun, get bullets and load the gun he didn't need one. My son was reared around loaded guns that were not locked up. We were taught that the world doesn't revolve around us. If you want to be first you have to work at it. Not everybody can be first and we may be last but we did our best. We were also taught that nobody is liked by everybody and just because somebody don't like us it is not the end of the world. Larry

I graduated from High School in 1962. All through out my Jr High and High School years boys had their fights and even a few of the girls. The Jr High School I went to had a service station across the street and the owner was a very nice guy. The kids would go hang out after school and he was always patient with us. It got to be a place for boys who wanted to fight to go. if he caught them fighting he would buy them both a soda and make theme shake hands then he'd sit them down and talk to them. Made sure they were "ok" before they left. Sometimes when a boy was having more than one or two fights a year he'd call their parents and they would all talk things out. This was a great guy and a friend to all the kids. The parents seems to appreciate his intervention and friendliness with the kids. I guess a guy like that today would be suspect and persecuted and a predator. Too bad.

In High school it was the parking lot or one of the Home Economics building (a group of 4 old houses that were bought by the school district and converted to home ec cottages) if a teacher caught the fight the combatants were pulled aside and talked to. Occasionally parents were called but not always. It just depended upon the boys attitudes once the fight was stopped.

and remember too that in those days it was "you hit me first." "No I ain't throwin' the first punch." and the first punch was usually in the arm. No one ever dreamed of using a weapon, not ever.

I guess I had my share of fights but no more than the average. No teacher nor Mr. X at the gas station ever over reacted or wanted to call the police or get ridiculous about it. They used common sense and patience in talking to us. It was never a problem, just part of the right of passage of a boy growing up in America in the '50s.

But one of the reasons this could have been like this is as stated above. The world was not as crowded. It was a kinder gentler time and we as a nation and a people still had some measure of innocence. With violence escalating in every aspect of life on the planet earth these days people are becoming desensitized and kids are growing up with violence being a bigger and bigger part of life in games and for real.

It's all so sad but what can we do? What ever the answer is I believe it has to start with education or re education and it is going to take a long time. Perhaps two or more generations and that is if it starts tomorrow. The longer this trend goes the less likely it can ever be turned around. Is it already too late? I hope not.

I agree, we got in fights, somebody won, somebody lost, but it was over. Half the time we ended up friends. Nobody had to hand hold you, nobody needed their feelings soothed. The neutering of the American Male has played a role in creating these shootings as well.
